What type of wood is that neck? Bit hard to see and... what about the headstock? Is that a "normal" headstock? Looks a bit funny to me.

We have seen that guitar or a similar one before....The seller is not aware of the value of that guitar nor is he versed on what it exactly is.

Its quite obviously not a 1970, more like a '76/77.....

Its a one-off with the varitone switch which makes it collectable couriosity but $2K ? I think that estimate is very optimistic.....

Hi all

This is a very rare Ibanez model 2458. It has been in production from 1974 until unknow so far, but thanks to the headstock shape of this one it must have been produced until early 1976 at least.
It has exactly the same electronics than the L6S copy. I guess they must have thought that the die-hard Les Paul freaks might also like the electronics of the L6S but that they might not like the shape of it.
I have one in my collection too, in great and original condition. I paid 370 Euroīs for it (around 500 US dollars), so I think the seller is way out of reality here.
By the way: the fretboard is maple.
I never saw a Gibby Les Paul like that, so this is in fact NOT a copy.
Hereīs some pictures of mine:

Kind greetz,

Michael

The weight of the 2458 is just the same as the weight of an average bolt-on Les Paul copy. It has the same construction: bolt on neck, arched plywood top with "sound chambers" underneath.
I can tell you though that the sound of it is way much better than that of most bolt-on LPīs. Must be due to the very clever electronics, that give you a wide range of useful sounds. The guitar is very versatile.

At first I saw the auction and thought the whole thing was a sham. Then I read Harry's post. This site rocks. All you FBI/CSI guys are my new favorite show. Besides, they took Raines off CBS.

I can't believe how clean the hardware is on some of these old guitars. Harry's bridge is meatier?

I can see a $500 invest into this one, not 2g. These guys are ate out of their head. Part of why I like Ibz. is because I won't ever spend 2g on one guitar. (I'd sooner have 5 or 6 at around 3-5 hundred apiece;)

What gives with the "special electronics". I'm considering various surgical manuvers on my recently aquired Ibz. 2350. Is there a diagram posted for this 2458 or the L6S copy somewhere? If it "makes the guitar sound way better than that of most bolt on LP's," it's a no brainer.

71, If the guitar has the same electronics as the early L6S copies, it is special indeed. Ibanez really nailed the L6S (Bill Lawerence's design when he was at Gibson). The pickups are overwound and epoxy potted-super hot with the tonal pallette that only a varitone switch can give.

Emilio, I think that its a personal taste. Set neck vs Bolt on....didn't we teach you anything ? This is an Ibanez forum, no "set neck snobs" allowed !

I'll put my torn up '74 Deluxe 59er up against ANY Gibson set neck LP and the sound of those vintage Super 70's will trash most of the overpriced Gibsons, I don't care how the neck is attached !

FYI, the body of the L6S isn't SOLID...its made up of several pcs of wood LAMINATED (Glued) together in a sandwich !

I only comment because I own a 74' Gibson L6S set neck...and it smokes...it's m.o. is a better "clean" sounding axe (nicest clean sound I've ever played on any electric), awesome versatility, and still can get a very decent dirty sound--Santana named it his "Rainbow" guitar for its versatility in sound. Just a great, light, thin bodied guitar.

As compared to my Ibby LP 70's bolt on's, I would go with the Gibson for sure on the clean side and for the versatility, and its a toss up between them on the dirty side... I doubt its due to the set neck alone. But the neck on my L6s is awesome...one axe Gibson really got right in the Norlin years. The earlier years are the ones to get imho.

Only way to tell on this Ibby copy is to play it, having the "real" L6s to compare it to...that would be fun. The Ibby copy (if it is a copy of the L6S) looks stunning for sure. And yep, mine is sandwich construction.

JCMC....You got it ! I feel a L6S shootout comming on !

I own several early 70's Gibson L6S's because I agree with you regarding that model-Bill L really got it right, even if the fellas at Gibson messed with his design.

The Ibanez clone is an EXACT duplicate, but lets do a direct comparison !

details to follow

OK fellas... I've gotta step in here, as this was THE guitar that sold me on Ibanez, in 1977... and got me back into this forum, trying to find another one, about a year & a half ago.

History: In 1977, I was working in a music store, in Roanoke, VA. This music store was a Gibson dealer & we stocked both the L6S Custom & the L6 Deluxe (string-thru, oil-finish body, rosewood fingerboard, basic 3-way switch, basic electronics). I'd played both & fell in love with the 'S', for its tonal pallette & maple neck & fingerboard (an old affair with a maple-neck Tele still had me convinced). Then, one day, a 'touring' guitarist came in & traded his Ibanez 2451 for the far inferior L6 Deluxe, just to have the Gibson logo on the headstock. After I'd made the deal (with a healthy commission), I played the 2451 & the L6S, side by side, in a practice studio, through a Fender Twin.

Results: The 2451 SMOKED the L6S! It had better action, higher output, smoother overdrive, MORE tonal variations, better pots, yada, yada, yada. It was an instant love affair. I immediately made a deal with the store manager to buy it for what I'd allowed for it in trade ($250) & played it ecstatically, until my ex forced me to sell it & my equally loved Music Man 210-65 amp in a "baby's coming" panic.

I dreamed about that guitar for almost 30 years, until I got another one, last year, from Dave_g. It's been like hooking up with an old sweetheart, ever since.

Jim... The L6S is a GREAT guitar...

But... Dave still owns several perfect examples of both... and my memories of the comparison are 30 years old.

SOOOOOOOOO

LET THE GAMES BEGIN!!!

This is a L6-S copy for sure. Looks dead on to my Gibson...its a set neck too.

Heeeeyyyy....this one used to be mine!!!!
For about three years I sold this one. It was totally customised when I bought it. When I got a better and original one I sold this one to a guy in Germany. It just has 2 Epiphone humbuckers in it and it had a toggle switch in the position of the 6-way rotary. I bought a new 5 way rotary and wired the thing so that 3 positions were active: neck pickup/both pickups/bridge pickup. Same combinations as with a normal toggle switch (apart from the two extra stand-by positions ). I fitted a chicken head knob in order to at least make it look a little closer to the original.
Guitar plays great, but in matters of sound itīs far away from the original setup.
Collectors. leave your hands from this one. Players who give a sh.. about originality: grab the thing and instal a couple of good pickups.

Harry, did you notice that it had "eine Neubundierung"? That's a refret of 220 euros.

Yeah, I saw that....
Keep in mind that I sold this guitar to the guy for 150 euro or so....
So the refret job did cost him more than the entire guitar. I don't know if that was such a smart move.
Wonder for how much this "little Frankenstein" will sell....
