I have '77 2617 that a previous owner replaced original nut with black plastic and was wondering if nos or otherwise was available?

Thanks for any info,

Jeff

Gratefuldad:

It's possible that the '77 2617 had either a plain bone or brass/bone combination nut. What's the serial number so we can tell what month your guitar was made? If it was late in '77 then it was probably a half and half nut.

In that case, the current JSM100 (John Scofield signature) model has a bone/brass nut that will probably fit. You should be able to order it from www.ibanez/com or a local Ibanez dealer. Here's the part number and price:

Hey, that's a far better price!
I think the separation issues are to be expected on NOS ones. I think they used 2K glue, like when you make jewellery, and 30 years is a long time.

Johns, can you confirm which ones have the issue?

I think you'll find that by '77 the were putting the half and half nut on the Artist range.

Ginger:

I have no first hand experience with these nuts or the "separation" issue that has been reported by others. I would have thought that these were new parts because they ar used on the JSM100 Scofield model. I just looked up the part and confirmed that it is the same part number used on the AR3000. I assume that it would fit on an older Artist neck.

Really? Maybe we should debate it? :-) That's what I was leaning toward, but did want to leave room for the "early" '77 exceptions that will probably pop-up and prove me a liar.

Does anyone have experience with changing from a bone to a half/half nut, or vice versa? Is the sound difference really noticeable?

Gratefuldad:

Cool username, btw.

L77 means your guitar was made in Dec. '77. It's obviously made to the specs shown in the '78 catalog. That means a half and half nut.

Trying to find a New Old Stock (NOS) nut from the late 70s is going to be much harder and more expensive than ordering the part I mentioned above, directly from Ibanez/Hoshino.

MK the ones that goodvibrations sells are the same as HUSA. I spoke with somone about it off line who told me this.

John i think these are good replacements however mine looks like they are giving more brass then bone. Check out these comparison pics I shot of the new verses the ST100.

John

Well, when I say 'by' '77 what I really mean is around '77 probably mid to late '77....ish

Earlier in my Ibanez days I have had H&H nuts changed to bone/plastic. I prefer the 'tone of bone' (I copyright that phrase here and now ) but they turned out to look a little ugly because it's a pretty big slot.

Here is the thread I started about the nut. Another member also mentions that the brass is thicker. My pics are hard to discern but with the naked eye its plain to see. Over all its the same thickness as the old one just more brass and less bone.
