I just won this item on ebay.nl:
http://cgi.benl.ebay.be/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem& item=140143088116
at first sight, there are allready some strange things (pick ups, tuners, bridge (?)). Can anyone tell me what hardware should be original on it?
Kind regards,

Lieven

Lieven:

This is going to be a tough one to figure out totally.

First, I don't think it's a '77. From what I can see of the serial number, the guitar was made in August '76.

I suspect that the controls have been modified. I think the coil split switch is in the place where the tone control was. The front volume switch is too close to the other. I'll bet that is a new drill hole. (I don't think there should be a coil tap switch.) Here's a very early 2619 that has most of the features that I would think your 2617 should have.

One picture can tell a lot. I was suspiscious about the bridge but it seems to be original. They inversed the position of the toglle switch with one of the tone pots. If they did not drill a bigger hole to do that, it should be reversible. but, the tuners and the pick ups. What's you guy's opinion about their originality?

Lvdvondel...Tuners look like Gibson or aftermarket, the pickups originally would have been super 70's with the logo on them. I bet this guitar has aftermarket dimarzios in it...

Dave:

Does it sound right that a mid '76 2617 would have a coil splitter switch, like the early 2619? I've been looking through all the 2617 pictures I can find and none seem to have a factory installed mini-switch.

We all know better than to say "never", but if it helps, my mid 76 2617 has no coil tap switch.

Oouuww! That top sure is purty!

Well, no coil tap there, either. Do you think your tailpiece and bridge are original?

As soon as I get the guitar (somewhere by the end of the week, I'll give it a close inspection. The tuners are not original but the seller claims that the coilswitch (minnitogle) is absolutely original (he only changed the position of the tonepot and the minnitogle)and he also claims that the pickups are original. Well, I keep you guys informed and allready many thanks for your feedback.

This guitar has been floating around several dealers in Holland for a year or two. I have had it in hands twice (on different locations). I am quite sure the extra hole is drilled afterwards, i.e. non stock.

Les Paul is dead right about the holes and Daves picture is the closest to what Lieven's guitar should look like.

Is it just me or does the volume knob for the bridge pup look too close to the neck volume. Just making an observation.

Roland, yes, definitely. That's what John said earlier. Sure looks like this guitar has had some surgery around the knobs.

Thanks Chazmo. I guess I overlooked what John said earlier. That should be a fun project, but not a cheap one.

The good thing is that I have a NOS tailpiece, the bad thing is that I do not have the original pick ups and tuners (anny suggestions?!)
The other thing is that I do not really know yet how to proceed with the restauration process (beside of putting the original hardware on) So, any suggestions and input are welcome.
