Hi Guys,

I've noticed that you lot are indeed an impassioned lot of guitar/ibanez nuts. My question is this: apart from being free of cracks and in possession of original hardware, what are the criteria apart from relative rarity that seperates a "player" from a "collectible". I've got 14 guitars (most of which back in Scotland now), but even when I had them hanging on the wall, I made a point of playing each one at least every month (or getting rid of the ones i didn't) and rotating them (or at least the best 3 or 4) when I was gigging. I always felt that there was something inherently sad about a guitar that didn't get a chance to sing once in a while......Am I the one being a saddo here?....Is ICW exactly what it says on the tin: you gather and collect guitars for the purpose of investing in what might be the value of a '59 les Paul in 30 years time? You just love Ibanez guitars? is it the rarity factor like stamps? You want to leave something for posterity? You have too much money and they take up less space than vintage sports cars?
Even with my measly collection I was all too well aware I only have one pair of hands..and like all collectors loaners only went out to close friends I could implicitly trust..and everything ALWAYS got locked away at parties (haha)!
Lot's of questions here lets hear from the hoarders ,from the musos, from the luthiers from the players, from the obsessed, from the patently confused " I don't actually know-ers"......Oh...and when does a "collectible" become a "player"? when it falls off the wall and gets a ding?

Collectors are just nuts....
Whether an object is a collectable object or not depends on the interest of the individual person. To me, for instance, stamps are no collectorīs objects. I just stick īem on an envelope and therefor I use them what they were meant for.
Itīs the same with guitars: some just look upon them as "working tools" for musicians: they should be played and thatīs it. Who cares about dings and dongs, the scratches and the originality? If you can improve the sound or the function of the guitar why not change the pickups or the tuners? If the pickguard or the chrome pickup- and bridge cover is bothering you, why not remove it?
Collectors want to have the guitar as original as possible and as mint as possible. Purpose: to preserve and maintain in best possible condition.

I collect because itīs fun and some kind of challenge at the same time. My roots are in the 70īs, at the time the European market got flooded with Japanese instruments. Ibanez was always my favourite copy brand.
So I collect mostly out of nostalgic feelings.
My Ibanez collection will never be played by me. I do check them when Iīm done with the cleaning, polishing etc. after Iīve found a new addition, because I want them to be functional, even if they just hang from the wall.

I'm a "type" collector more than a "collectible" collector (with coins as well as Ibanez guitars). So for me, it's important to have a particular date of coin more than to have it in Uncirculated condition. Likewise, I'm looking for particular "types" of Ibanez guitars, and I'll sacrifice "minty" for a price break. I'm really not interested in resale value. (Though I do buy and sell other guitars in an effort to make a profit, but just to have the bucks ready to buy the Ibby's I want.) I collect Ibanez's because that's what I originally bought and played back in the 1970's. I'm sure that's a common theme too. We're a bunch of 40- and 50-year old guys, I bet. ;-)

Harry, please tell me you have a guitar that you play? I understand the collector's thing fully but hopefully you are a musician at heart!
