Peter,
Look real close, the neck is broken. The side has a huge gouge in it. The neck is warped. It has the wrong tuners, the bridge is bent, the pickups dont work, it is missing the plug jack, the body is crooked and the strings are on backwards.

I don't think you want this one.

Jack

Looks nice. Go for it guys! :-)

I find it interesting that this axe has a real serial number and also a fretboard stamp. This seems to contradict the idea that the fretboard stamps were an early form of serial numbering.

Well, I tried to start a thread on this in the Replicas area, since Destroyers are replicas, but I guess it doesn't really matter. This one showing up doesn't bode well for our friend who's trying to sell his for $2,200+. I guess now we'll see what the real market value is on one, or at least value as determined by a market consisting of Peter and Jack.

Peter is broke.

Lopaco, I didn't want to mention the plywood thing, I was wondering if Peter would see that.

Hi all

Seller claims that apart from the pickups the guitar is in original condition.
But I´ve never seen a Destroyer with a black pickguard. Anyone of you who did see an (original) black pickguard on an Ibanez Destroyer?

Kind greetz,
Harry

Jack -

Sorry, dude, I saw it before you bid on it.

I haven't bid *yet* because I asked a couple of questions and I'm waiting for answers.

Harry -

Saw your post over in the Replicas thread and, I agree, it's aftermarket but I can't prove it.

So if I get this right, 1976 Blue velvet lining in the case, 1977 Green lining?
Anyway, just so you know, I somehow did not loose the reflex to daily check the web for Destroyers, I wont buy another one, but ill report it here in a flash.....I feel bad for you guys desperate for one.....and I do mean that.
Cheers

It looks like I might not have eBay capability at the end of the auction. I do not expect to bid much after tonite, but I probably will have my brother bid for me.
I just dont think I can control Peters influence on my wallet.
Remember, HE ALREADY HAS ONE!!!!!!

Momo -

I'm not sure about case lining color.

The Destroyer I owned back in the 70s had a yellow/gold case lining.

Since then I've seen a lot of the Korina Destroyers and Rocket Rolls with that same color case lining.

The 76 RRS I have has (what I believe to be) the original Ibanez case with that yellow/gold lining.

76 Rocket Roll

There are other color case linings out there but I have no clue how to date a case or if it is even possible.

The 75 Destroyer I have has a non-Ibanez case with a black lining.

People are going to argue with me but I want to say the 70s Korinas came with that yellow/gold case lining and all other colors are from earlier/later years or aren't Ibanez cases.

The world according to Pete.

For what its worth, my pre-serial cherry V came with the exact same case as you have pictured.

My Korina V (soon to be mine) has the yellow lined case too, and I remember my original Korina from 1976 had a yellow lined case.

Blue lined case is also original Ibanez issue for this guitar. There are a few variations on the case.

Peter,
Did you get your response to your questions, somebody else has jumped into the foray. I got some additional pics and the seller thinks that he has played a black pickguarded destroyer in the 70s. I have never seen one in all of the pics that I have seen and I tend to believe Harry that he has never seen one either. Johns brings out a good point in the fact that he hasn't seen serial numbers both on the neck and in the headstock.
Does you 75 have neck numbers only?
Seller also thinks that he has a $1600 reserve which does not exist in his listing AND PLEASE DON"T TELL HIM.
If the guitar doesn't go over $1600, he may have to try to welch on the auction and not ship the guitar. If the guitar stays below $1600, then I guess market is what this one goes for.
Peter, I am emailing you tonite.

Jack -

I have not received any images from him but I did get an e-mail that answered some questions I had but the last part of it made no sense.

I thought he had gotten the Destroyer auction confused with another auction he had going, so I checked, and he only has the one auction on eBay.

This is the screwy part of the e-mail I received:

"...I Have had several people ask what my buy it price now is it was $2200.00 but the resever has been met and I don't know if I can put it back on. The reserve was $1600.00

- hurricainjack"

I don't see either a reserve or a BIN price and the current auction price was only $410 at the time of that e-mail.

I'm getting a funny feeling about this one.

I had sent him a second e-mail asking if the Super 70s were a matched pair. I told him about the ink stamped numbers on the bottom of the pups.

This is the response I received:

"The pickups are not matched. However one is labled N for neck and the other is B for bridge."

Has anyone ever seen the B and N notation on a Super 70 pup?

As far as fretboard/serial numbers go, I didn't even know there *was* a fretboard number until John's posting.

I know my 75 does not have a serial number. I don't know about the fretboard number off the top of my head.

I'm doing homework right now and I don't have time to go look.

I'll check it out this weekend, though.

If my Destroyer does have a fretboard number, where on the fretboard would it be?

Is it ink stamped or is it stamped into the wood?

Thanks,

- Pete

This is not intended to be argumentative or nasty in any way.

I'm simply asking for information.

When you said a blue case lining is also original for "this guitar", did you mean the Korina Rocket Roll specifically or did you mean the Destroyers, too?

What is your source of information?

Did you own a Rocket Roll back in the 70s and it came with a blue lined case?

Thanks,

- Pete

Peter,
The neck marking is at the 24th fret at the top and is stamped in the wood. I didn't see it either and will do homework.
BTW, my email had some squirly stuff in it too, I am getting nervous also, Somebody else jumped in with a higher bid, is this an ICW member?

Well using this as the gold standard, considering it is mint in case:

1

(it's the Crazy Train Destroyer)

The one on the Bay has replaced knobs and a replaced pickguard. We know that much. Here's the eBay D, so we have them side by side:

Another possibly telling small detail. The CTD has a cream toggle switch, while the eBay D has an orange one. Maybe we should get some comparisons of the logos? Since we don't have one on the CTD, we'll need shots from other reputable D's.

ANother peculiarity, the neck is marked 78, not 76 which adds to the question, what really is this guitar?

I'm talking about Destroyer cases. I have owned ones with both the green interior lining and also with blue interior lining, both of which match other Ibanez issued cases of the time. I'm just saying that both variations are correct in a collector's eyes. In fact the blue is a little bit cooler I think.

For Ibanez Rocket Roll Flying V cases, the only ones I have had in my hands are the typical black outside, gold lining of so many MIJ guitars.

The black pickguard guitar has a new guard and other new plastic to give it an "all black" look. Rings, knobs, switch, & guard all appear not original to the guitar. The neck pickup has been rotated so that would suggest someone's been in there to monkey around, maybe a changed pickup, maybe not. I'd always like a look under the guard in a situation like that.

Stamped numbers in the end of the fretboard was actually common for Tokai guitars from this period... the model # was stamped in the wood after the last fret. Not sure what this means on an Ibanez though.

Hope this helps a bit!

Ducati -

Not to be anal but *when* did you own them?

In the 70s or after 1980?

What I'm trying to determine is whether any of the 70s issued Destroyers (and Korina Rocket Rolls) had case linings other than the yellow.

If someone had owned a Korina Destroyer in the 80s and put it into a D-II case well, 20+ years later, we'd have no idea.

That's why I'm trying to find owners from the 70s.

The only Destroyer case around in the 70s was the Korina Destroyer's case.

FWIW: I do like the look of the Korina laquer against the blue plush, though.

My case has a black lining and it's just a little too dark.

Thanks.

Pre destroyer II.

The blue lined case pre-dates that guitar. Other Ibanez items from that time period came in similar cases (some artist cases, but more commonly mandolin cases). Look how many variations there are for artist guitar cases.

With regards to the auction, I made a mistake and have no reason to say the pickups rings have been changed. My mistake.

Peter,
thanks, but this only leads to additional questions on the Frankenstein guitar.

To answer another issue on my private email, yes my realname is Jack but I am not Hurricanjack! I do kid around with some of my posts (backwards strings, bent bridge etc) and in particular with Peter. I hope that you all can understand when I am making a joke or poking fun as I am me and that's me. I just hope that I haven't offended anyone.
As far as this guitar, it will benefit from supply and demand. I don't really think that this is as pristine of a guitar as it is being represented. Look at the other Destroyer, it is gone.
Besides (Joke coming), Peter needs to buy it so he can have some junky ones in his collection like I have in mine!! LOL

I try real hard not to buy firewood.

I take care of my toys, have a smoke free home, and don't gig so I keep them in as good shape as is possible.

In general, when I first get a new guitar I'll send it off to the lutier if it needs anything beyond a minimal cleaning.

I have one player, a DT250, that the laquer has cracked on pretty badly and the black-coated metal parts have started to corrode a little bit.

Other than that, they're all in pretty good shape.

So, this Destroyer is a white pick guard, a white toggle knob and three gold volume/tone knobs away from at least LOOKING like it's a stock Destroyer. (Oh, and flipping the neck pickup around, since it's in backwards.) The blue case is consistent with the "The Gear Page" Destroyer's case, and we know that's original. (Well, everyone except Ginger knows it.)

I saw another orange-colored toggle knob on an eBay guitar just a couple days ago. It was a Greco. That could imply that the Destroyer was made at FujiGen. Alone, it means nothing, but it also may mean this is just one of those Ibanez abberations. It's probably worth more than $1,000 because of that.

There was that kludged together one from Tennessee (I think) on eBay a while back that no one bought.

It seems like there's no middle ground.

You either pay an arm and a leg for one or you don't buy.
