Here is a picture of a Super 80 bridge pickup from a 1976 Scruggs. Notice how it has 4 wires red, blue, black and yellow.

1

Until this picture, I had only seen 3-wire trisound Super 80's with red, white & blue wires plus a ground. I've seen these pickup wires in the 2619/AR300(1979), AR500(1979) plus an extra set that I have.

Check out this wiring diagram change notice from Hoshino:

2

It shows the red/white/blue/ground pickup replaced by a red/yellow/blue/black wire pickup and is dated of March 1979. I always thought this change was related to the 'transition' (ie: 2619 -> AR300, Super 80 -> Super 58).

Has anyone seen any other 4-wire Super 80's? Was this a mod? How could a '76 Scruggs have the March 79 change? Would a 4-wire Super 80 be less noisy in single coil & phase reversal settings?

tnx,
mk

Sorry I don't have any actual response to your questions Michael, but is that pitchpockets recent pickup. Apparently, I helped get him a deal on that one since it had been so abused(loved?) I also wondered about that phase switch on there. I wondered if it was aftermarket.

When I asked him if he modified anything, he said he absolutely didn't and that he was the only owner, but when I pointed out the tuning keys were not original, he sort've fessed up and said he "might" have changed them out at some point.

Of course, this is only if it's the same guitar I'm talking about.

By the way, there is another AD230 being auctioned off this very minute on the bay. The price is rising rapidly. I wonder how high this one will go ?

Flutterby, Yes you did help. You helped by passing on a '76 Scruggs when you had a chance. Many thanks.

The guitar was owned by a pro musician (claims he is the original owner) who played it regularly as his main axe. Not abused, but used. Tuners were changed over to Grovers quite some time ago. The duo tone or phase reversal switch (whatever it is) is exactly the same as my 2672.

After I cleaned off the layer of smoke and grime, it is actually in pretty good shape. Not a closet classic for sure (more of a relic), but for the price, it is a find for me. You don't see a '76 Scruggs come up for sale very often.

Here are a couple of "before" photos taken when I brought it home. The case is rough, but repairable, pup covers are worn (he actually wore a hole in the bridge pup) and there is corrosion on the fancy tail piece from sweat. It's at the shop for a fret dress and a couple of finish repairs. I'll post the "after" photos when I get it back if anyone is interested.

Michael is curious about the wiring of the Super 80, way more technical than I need to get.

Sweet!!!!!!!!!!! I may have made an error in judgement. I won't do it again.

I am not a collector, though, I am an inexperienced player. In my eyes, I saw a guitar that was probably going to sound very similar to my Weir with super 80's and a solid ash body. The investment aspect of it didn't even cross my mind.

Right now, I am absolutely in love with my 2630 acquired from Blues. If I would have known how great a semihollow body was I would have been searching them out a long time ago. Holy crap! The thing is alive in my hands!

I wonder how much that Scruggs will be worth once it is all cleaned up? Anyone know?

Mike, that axe don't look so bad at all! How much did you land it for (if you don't mind me asking.) Yours looks a heck of alot better than satan's 2671 when it arrived and that one turned out real nice after dave's work and the replating of the hardware. I think you got yourself a keeper there and it never hurts to have a decent axe, you can play, and not cry if you bump into an amp or something. Mine has super 70's in it though, I like them a heck of alot.

Bobzilla, it's Steve, but that's ok, just don't call me late for dinner! I picked it up for well under $1000, but given the circumstances I think it was fair..a nice deal and a heck of a find, but fair to both. Definitely a working mans guitar. An object of income rather than adoration. From what I can tell, it's going to clean up really well.

It's got Grovers that look like they've been on it forever. They are worn about evenly with the rest of the hardware.

The bridge pup ring is broken, but a clean break so it can be glued. Wouldn't doubt that they were both replaced with cream color. The screws were all rusted, but I got them out save one that broke off. Not sure how Kerry is going to get it out, but he said he can.

Are the fancy tail piece and bridge available? These one is pretty worn. I'd be interested in your experience re-plating the covers. However, this guy wore a hole in the top left hand corner of the bridge pup and it'd need to be replaced. I think this one may just be fine as a relic piece complete with the bumps and bruises.
