Strange indeed pre lawsuit 6 string headstock post 12. Makes you wonder.
So has anyone seen a post lawsuit double necker?

Harry, how about you?

Freak:

I would agree with the neck change idea. I'll guess the 6 string side.

I thought I would post some pics of my doubleneck with post-lawsuit headstocks here as a comparison. Serial number is L770157, which must make it one of the last copies made at the factory? Ironically, mine also had a nasty headstock break (on the 12 string side) some years back (courtesy of my then 3 year old). Happily, I was able to obtain a replacement neck in the correct style through this board and Geoff Byrne :-)

Just out of interest, where does the serial number appear on twin-necks?

On a 2640, the # is on the back of the peg-head on the 6-string neck.

Take a look at this artist:

http://cgi.ebay.com/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&category=33043&item=7317410078

It has plain pearloid block inlays, and contrary to what it claims in the listing, I can only count 22 frets. Don't think I've ever seen one like this.

I just recieved this guitar and , much to my suprise-the fret markers are original and the board is "ebonized" rosewood (damn)..Good news is that its in pretty good shape. The owner has installed a push/pull pots, a Varitone switch and a signal splitter-but did not drill any new holes-now to break out the stash of NOS parts to return this baby to its original look. Has anyone ever seen an artist (I assume its a 2218) with plain perloid markers (they look like the markers on the early Iceman)?

All the best parts of a PAF and a Dimarzio morphed together-only thing is they are friggin UGLY...I might try a set of covers.....Anyone ever heard of these Doyle pickups ? from the net I was able to find out that hes from Jersey and has pUPS in a lot of jazz boxes-but theres not a lot of info...}

Its sn AV ('77) but it has some aftermarket pups in it with creme colored bobbins-I'll put these in and put the Ibanez S '80's covers on 'em..

OK, spent a couple of hours on this guitar...I added: NOS pearl tuners, NOS Super 80's, NOS Tone/Volume pots,NOS selctor switch, Orange Drop caps, Sure Grip Knobs, new PUP surrounds (Gibson)..OK she looks and sounds great (little problem with the bridge PUP-a screw broke off in the body right where a new screw needs to go-you may notice that the pup is a tiny bit crooked-I'll fix that next string change) The guitar is a "G77". This guitar came with the plain tuners (but they were the ones with the adjustment screw and tool) and a plain bone nut (original, I checked). Possibly had plain knobs on it , but since it was a '77-I put the sure grips on it.

I really like the plain inlays-reminds me of the Iceman inlays.

Any Comments ?}

My question is on the inlays..Clearly this is a 2618-check out how close together the pups are in relation to the neck-Has anyone ever seen an Artist with these inlays ? They are original, no doubt.

Dave

Check around the 12th fret to see if there are any plugged holes where the double fret marker dots may have been

Can't say I've seen a 2618 with block inlays.

Are these models that precise? I somehow got the impression that Ibanez had some flexibility in those days. I would like to hear your thoughts on that, whether or not the exact features of each model were always the same.

I have combed this guitar up and down , compared it to other '77's (remember the 2619's with the abalone purfiling ?) those block inlays are ORIGINAL to this guitar ! What is confusing is that its actually kinda late in the year for "transition" models (its a "G"= June)...

Dave.. It would be near impossible to tell if the inlays were aftermarket.. A half decent repairer could fit new block inlays to a guitar without anyone being able to tell the difference. The biggest giveaway would be if they are true Mother of pearl or plastic (plastic inlays are not common on the luthier market)To me they look like they were fitted to a guitar with dot inlays to get the look of the Lesp Paul customs of the time.

I have just bought a set of pre cut inlays to fit to an sz320..

Spiro, if these are aftermarket, the guy that put them in should be working for Ibanez-even under VERY CLOSE inspection-there are NO miscuts, no Misalignments,no filler or glue marks, no evidence of any previous dots and no miscuts or scrapes or lines on the board anywhere ! I've seen THOUSANDS of boards-both factory and aftermarket-this is factory-no doubt !

hmmm.....

I have redone inlays and I can tell ya that unless you have 10 thumbs you can do a perfect job. Ibanezes inlay work is sometimes pretty poor and they use filler.. A luthier would do a better job than factory I can assure you.. Besides if you were replacing dots there is no way in hell of telling.. cause where the dots were there is now bigass piece of MOP!!

I tend to agree with Spiro on this one. Although it’s impossible to know for sure that the inlays are not factory, it is quite easy to do that sort of inlay work.

Its especially easier when the inlays are square blocks since you can basically "rough out" the perimeter of the inlay with a good sharp chisel or razor knife, or better yet, use a template in combination with a bit collar on your router/dremmel.

Freak, there's a good book on doing inlay work by Larry Robinson called "The Art Of Inlay". The book does a real nice job of outlining the techniques that he uses. It also has some impressive examples of some of his personal work.
