I need help identifying a limited Iba...

Author Message   Bastian Heckl Posted on Friday, October 08, 2004 - 10:59 am:    I'm trying to identify a Roadster guitar I've recently bought. It has no indication to what model it is on it, except for the serial number (L805091) and the remark "Crafted in Japan" on the back of the headstock. It is a neck-thru-body model; the neck is crafted from three pieces of maple. The body might be ash, the finish is vintage sunburst. The hardware (Ibanez Smooth II tuners and accu cast bridge) is gold. It has three black Super Tap 6 single coil pickups mounted via three black plastic frames. The controls are: volume, tone, five way pickup selector switch, an output jack on the front side of the body and two small on/off-switches. What exactly are those good for? The one fattens up the sound, the other one is supposed to reverse the phase of the middle pickup. What would I gain from that? Also, does anyone know what the guitar cost back when it was new? All Roadsters I know are bolt-on necks. Could one of the mini switches been added.are they exactly the same? A Musician or Studio comes to mind. However, I have seen too many "specials" or "transition" models to say categorically it can't be. The neck-thru Artist/Musician and my neck-thru AS400 are living proof that Ibanez experimented with, short-lived, neck-thru designs. Besides, Dieter looks to be from Denmark. And anything could have happened in Europe! J   Bastian Heckl Posted on Friday, October 08, 2004 - 10:59 am:    Hello again! My dad Dieter isn't from Denmark but from Germany (and so am I)... The guitar is definitely a neck-thru because you can see it because of the mostly transparent finish and the neck joint is perfectly smooth; there are no screws, not even the smallest edge or indication to a set-in neck. It says "Roadster series" on the front of the headstock, so I'd say it is one. The switches are exactly the same, except for the color; maybe one's been used more often (one is rather silver, the other rather black). I found this guitar on a US site recently. It looks exactly like the Roadster you describe (except for the color). You are correct in it's a rare neck thru design and the sound is very sweet and mellow. I paid $500.00 for it but felt I got a great price on a rather unusual Ibanez.
