My friend want to purchase a new guitar for his son who's outgrown his first guitar. I was wondering if anyone has any thoughts regarding the new AR-200, which I assume is Korean made. Also, how much should one expect to pay for an AR-200? If you don't recommend an AR-200, what would you recommend. He's not looking to spend lots of money.

Thanks,
Michael

Michael that would depend on what he wants to do with it. Does he want a fixed bridge or a whammy?

I'm guessing fixed. I'm also curious how people feel about the newer AR-300 too.

if he is considering the ar200, then id recommend the ar300....it as the super58's (reissues) and MOP inlays. i have the 2004 ar-300 and i think its great for the price...this years model has the better neck joint too. i dont think the quiality is the same as the older artist, but you dont have someone else wear and tear either, so....

depends on the style hes playing aswell??? i play anywhere from stoner rock to jazz on mine, not a metal guitar though!

Also where are you?? If you are in the states you could consider ebay.

I have the 05 ar300 in brown sunburst. it is beautiful. it plays awesome and i even play metal. it is truly an awesome guitar. I paid about 773 us dollars that included a case for 120 dollars. and tax of course. money well spent in my opinion. it is a looker and a player.

expect to pay about 20 to 25% off of list price for any ibanez at a reputable music store. most places will match musicians friend. so ASK THEM! good luck also check out the sz models. they are fixed bridge, seymore duncan pickups and a set neck. they look good but i dont care for duncans. also check out the destroyers they are old school but are comfortable to play and sound great! check out the RG's if you want a thin neck and a wammy.

I have an 04' SZ and the 05 with the duncan/ibanez pups sounds much better in my opinion.

I just got an SZ520 and it is getting high marks from every guitarist that I let play it. For the money it's really hard to find anything wrong with it.

It's very light compared to my '70s and '80s ARs. It has a clubbier neck profile and medium frets compared to the Artist's thin neck and jumbo frets. Also, the scale is 25.1" not 24.75" or 25.5".

The pickups are fairly hot so it would be hard to get away playing real clean (tradtional jazz).

So, the guitars are just different enough that I think a trip to the local Guitar Center or Ibanez dealer to try them out would be worth it. I've seen the SZ520s for $300-350.00 on ebay, sans case. But GC wants $499.00.

Michael,

Don't forget, ARs are heavy. You pay a price for all that great tone. I don't know how old your friend's son is, but the weight could be a consideration.

I give the SA series guitars very high marks. They are comfortable, sound great, and are well made and well equipped for a very low price. They have a traditional non-locking whammy and either an H-H or a H-S-S PU config.
