I recently came across a Pre Lawsuit Ibanez LP and would like help in dating it. Ibanez did not use serial numbers then. It had the cursive logo, star backed tuning keys and a red star in a circle stamped on the heal of the neck. Any ideas?

Doeringerofdgm:

The "red star in a circle stamped on the heal of the neck" doesn't sound familiar. Was this a bolt-on or set neck?

We need a lot more info. Actually, because all the LPs look similar, detailed pictures of controls, pups and inlays would be much more helpful.

Johns, Thanks!

I can post pictures later today but I am not sure how much good they will do since it was stripped and refinished and a third pup was added.
It is a bolt on with standard LP controls (2V, 2T, 3way) Black dot inlays. Original color looks to be an opaque cream or mint color from what I could see in the control cavities. The star stamp is under the original neck finish, maple on maple neck, "open book" headstock

Here are some pics of the guitar when I received it. I have taken much of the paint off and am quite happy with the wood underneath. The neck is in great condition as well as the hardware, it'll be a beauty when we're done.

Looks like an 1974,ex-ivory, 2342 to me.

Do you really think you can get 750 bucks for a completely butchered LP copy?
If so I am thinking some Dave G style sarcasm....

Please post some pics when it is restored.

Les, thanks, and yes sarcasm is always welcome. Our client is looking to possibly sell the guitar and suggested we start there, he'd come down some. The guitar will be completely refinished and the pups replaced. He may decide not to sell and just pay us for the work, or I might buy it from him because I love the feel so much. Either way it will be a fantastic instrument and that's where we stand, thanks for the help. More pics to come.

Doeringerofdgm:

The maple neck and fretboard are cool. So are the star tuners. What are you planning to do for the pickups? What's the wood and construction like? Lots of LP replicas had hollow birch tops.

I think that Lespaul has a valid point, a collector would have a hard time paying $700 for a mint condition bolt-on LP replica.

$700 for a mint condition guitar might not be out of reason for the right guitar, but a rebuilt/restored would not bring anywhere near that, maybe half? for that its not worth putting in the many hours. anyone that works that cheap, please contact me :?)
