I have a '78 Ps-10 Iceman with flying fingers pick-up covers. In the catalogs of the year, the pick-ups are black exposed coil V-2's. I have seen pictures of Paul Stanley on stage during the Alive II era with chrome covers on his PS-10. Is this a rarity?

Hi,

No, the first PS10's did not have the chrome 'flying fingers' pickups. Since the PS10 first appeared in the 1978 catalog it always been pictured with the black, uncovered V-2 pickups. I've seen a couple of photos of Paul playing a prototype though, so we know they existed. I have a photo on my own web page of one. You can see it at http://vintageibanez.tripod.com/psmodels.html

If that PS10 came from the factory that way - it's very rare indeed. But it's far more likely that the pickups were changed out. Does your PS10 also have a standard Iceman truss rod cover (says "Ibanez" on it, not "Paul Stanley") and chrome tuners? Does it have a regular nut or the bone/brass one? These things may lend credibility to the prototype theory, but since they can be easily changed it's hard to prove anything.

Authentic or not - it's very cool to have one! Are there any other numbers or markings in the control cavities that you've found?
