Search for 'AR300 Reissue' to see prior discussions about this guitar. A few years ago I was outbid on the reissue 2681. It was mint and went for $1,505. If this AR300 is anything like the original one, I got a great deal. It's as close to mint as could be. Even the case is excellent and it seems more durable than the 70's / 80's cases, especially the latches. The guitar is beautiful and yes, there are differences from the original AR-300: - the neck is thinner - it's a nice sounding guitar, however, it just doesn't have that sweetness that the older ones have. There are some sweet spots but not consistently throughout the guitar. - it doesn't have the same parts as the originals had. Overall, I'd say the parts are cheaper, including the tri-sound switches, knobs and the perloid tuners. The MOP inlay seems to be done on a smaller scale. - the headstock logo inlay is nice, however, the nice Alladin lamp-like artsy inlay is smaller than the original. - I was pleased that the single coil settings on the trisounds produced very little noise when both were used simultaneously. - bottom line: it's a nice sounding beautiful guitar, however it's not my cup of tea, therefore, I'm going to sell it. I'll give ICW first crack. I'll let it go for my cost: $499 plus shipping. I never owned an AR300, only an AR500, AR100 and AM-50 from the early 80's. I have played vintage AR300's at a store. Sure can't see it if so. How did those models sound after the change? Anyone else know for sure. It has very good tone, great intonation, a very nice neck and tri-tones! And, the condition is practically mint. I'm not sure I could say the same regarding a 2004 reissue. If a late '70's 2618/2619 came along at the right price in very nice condition, I would consider buying it and selling the AR-300, however, at $500, I think this AR-300 is a very good purchase. In fact, now I have a dilemma: when I originally decided to sell the AR-300, I purchased a vintage Tokai TST-56 strat copy. Now I like them both, and since I can only keep one (the wife's catching on...), I need to decide which one to sell. On a side note: I assume this has happened to others...I'll get a new guitar, play it a few times and then decide I don't like it and decide to sell it. Then, I'll force myself to play it and the more I play it, the more I like it. Sometimes, it becomes my main axe! Believe it or not, that happened to me with my AR-500. I almost sold it one month after I purchased it. Fortunately, I came around. I think you should sell both, and then weasel Dave G's Blonde ("What a Shame") '79AR500 off him and don't tell the wifey 'bout the price...she'll be happy you have just one new axe instead of two! And you'll be happy 'cuz I believe that axe is the ultimate piece that mastered the use of the Super80s of all the four-digit artists of the late '70s IMNSHO. They sound nothing like the >1980 AR500 (a great axe in its own right...but you don't seem as interested in the PAF sound) As an aside, have you ever heard SRV play Tin Pan Alley" on his Billy Gibbons custom (SRV in full inlayed across the frets)? I had it sounding just like that today and it was amazing...could not put it down. I think what makes that ('79 AR500) so unique is that the Super 80's have so much flexibility when coupled with the EQ and Trisounds. BTW - if you like Andy Summers' chording sound (with a good chorus) or Weir, when you get it back try this config: P-up selector in the middle, EQ on, Hi EQ rolled off a bit (other two flat), neck Trisound series (Humbuck) and bridge Trisound out-of phase...then strum away...it's like beefy glass!
