It this guitar original? I've never seen a finish like this and I'm no expert, however, I think the hardware may be changed too?

Mk,
Yeah, I was just looking at that also.
The finnish looks original, but the inlays look to have been added along with the different pups, control nobs. I'm curious about the stamp on the neck. I have seen that before, but not with just 3 digits. Early attempts by Ibanez to stamp serial no's were done on the fretboard.

Anyone have any ideas?

I think it is a re-finished 2618 with dot inlaids replaced by square blocks. The hardware are non-original also.

Six, This guitar is nothing like the one I bought earlier ths year. The guitar I bought has factory original block inlays & a cloud stop with a tuneomatic type bridge-this one has obvious aftermarket inlays (or might even be peal & stick "ablams")as evdienced by the split marker on the 12th fret-used to cover the two dots that were stock. I have seen this finish on the very early '76 Artists. It almost looks "hand rubbed". The 2619's with the purfiling have this type of finish. I think the hardware on this guitar is original-remember the first Artists had Gibson type stops. The knobs are aftermarket. As far as the fretboard stamps...I think I read somewhere that those marks were used for promotional artist samples ? I have a 2399 & a Custom Agent that both have similar "Z" series fretboard numbers and no serial numbers. The most interesting thing about this guitar is the case ! What a nice case !

Nothin' special about that case. My '77 2618-12 had one just like it. The finish in it was similar also.

2619 heres a scan of a 2619 from the elger days, note the stop tailpiece. knobs are non original on the "mis identified 2618" as well as the pickup covers missing. the case is most likely early 80's.

I don't think this was mis-identified at all. It has 24 frets and no coil tap. It certainly looks more like a 18 than a 19 to me. As far as the "inlays" are concerned, its hard to tell if they're real or not without personal inspection. They're certainly not the three-piece blocks like those used in the 2619s.

Fox, good call on the missing 24th fret marker. I wonder if its possible that they weren't marking the 24th back then? Dave, isn't your block-inlay 18 also missing the 24th fret marker?

The case is identical to that which came with my 83 105, so I agree its a mid 80s case.

"A little scratching on the back"? Are you kidding me? That's a major case of buckle rash.

Regardless, I think its a nice early specimen.

I have a Scruggs with "Y05" stamped on the fingerboard. I'd love to get confirmation on its purpose, although Dave's speculation is the story I've heard as well.

Ace, I see..The one with narrow T-O-M bridge.. Looks like another Ibanez experimental/added feature... :-)
It is a great way to determine old 2618s if it is "standard" on all those..
