Well, something I've been looking for a long time has appeared for sale on Ebay. A 2618/12 string.. but the noticable problem, as the owner puts it, is that the binding is loose either side of the neck joint.

But also, there is another for sale with the same fault.

The question, is this the binding coming loose or is the binding perishing causing it to come unstuck?

Does anyone else have a similar problem with a 2618 made 1978 or early 1979? Any comments would be appreciated.

Thanks,
Tom.

Tom, I'v experienced this same issue with a number of Ibanez guitars of that Vintage-including an Iceman. It seems that-under certain circunstances, the binding will shrink and pull away from the body in the areas of a "inside" curve. Its not easy to fix and-I believe-leads to the eventual deterioration or chrystalizing of the binding over time once air, moisture and heat get under the laquer....

FWIW...the binding on my '78 2622 is perfect. Am I lucky? Any tips on how to keep it in good condition?

I think it that the tension of a 12 string is much heavier for all the parts ,they do suffer ,that could explain it

Snow...The problem is esentially heat. Apparently excessive heat has a detrimental effect on the binding material-this is not limited to these models or years I have seen PF's, Professionals, Artists and others with this problem.....

Thanks Fellas,

I kinda think that the heat/humidity fits the bill with the 2618 for sale down under. Adelaide can get some pretty extreme weather conditions. I thought that perhaps there may have been an issue with glue or laquer around that peroid.

Tom.
