Super70 = lightly wound bobbins (low DC resistance), ceramic magnet, medium-low output, vintage PAF type tone. Not enough "balls" for me in the bridge position. Okay for neck position.

V2 = seriously over-wound bobbins (high DC resistance), alnico magnet, medium-high output, hotrodded distortion type tone. They sound great clean too (not for those who like single-coil twang). My favorite bridge pickup.

YMMV !!

Steve and Ekkerman, the original Super 70 from the '70s had Alnico 8 magnets. By the mid '80s, they had switched to ceramic. The difference in magnet materials would change the tone of the pickup, with ceramic being brighter sounding that Alnico 8. Even with the Alnico 8 magnets, Super 70s are brighter than the average PAF.

As far as Ibanez pickups go, if you're looking for classic tone with warmth, I always think Super58.

Ekkerman,

My V2 equipped AR100 sounds reasonably good for jazz, all things considered. It still has that solidbody twang to it, but it sounds full, warm and compressed. There are no problems with the pickup overdriving the amp using Yamaha, Polytone or Fender amps. I've always kind of wondered how the V2 would sound in a jazz guitar.

My criticism of the Super 70 is that it is too brittle and, hi-fi, and transmits too much picking noise. Sounded better in the neck than the bridge (this is based on my experience with my AS200)

I always thought of the V2 being the equiv of DiMarzio's old X2N...or quite close at least...no?

Nikki,

Not even in the same ballpark. The magnets in the V2 (alnico5 I believe) are much weaker than the ceramics used in the X2N. The V2 is mellow in comparison.

Craig,

Thanx for the info on the Super70 magnets!

Steve
