Getting tone from a LP clone

Author Message   Spoonch Username: Spoonch Registered: 02-2006 Posted on Wednesday, February 15, 2006 - 4:28 pm:    I have been a strat player for years, and I bought an 76 Ibanez Les Paul copy. I am into blues, rock, even a bit of folk. I can not play this guitar worth beans. I think for starters the action is too low. The bottom E buzzes and booms. The high strings are not as loud as the bass strings. I can not chord it, because of this. I am in favour of raising the action altogether. I am playing through an 80's princeton reverb II, which got along with the strat, and other guitars, including an SG just fine. I realize that the tone settings will be radically different, but how so? The gain? What is the basic tone philosophy for playing a Les Paul, or clone? I would prefer to leave specific amps out of the solutions for now. What should I look for in a very basic way? I need experience here.   Pitviper Username: Pitviper Registered: 08-2005 Posted on Thursday, February 16, 2006 - 6:26 am:    You could have a few things wrong..if you have little or no experiance setting up a guitar...take it to a pro..talk about what you want and go from there. I prefer having the action as low as possible on all of my guitars. "Cording" as you put if should be no problem at all, and really should be much better the lower the action is. Being a "strat" guy..you will have to learn a slightly different "style" of playing because it's certainly not the same...that being said..the transition should be simple and fast if your an accomplished player.   Nikki Username: Nikki Registered: 01-2006 Posted on Sunday, February 19, 2006 - 6:37 pm:    Hi! You mention an SG- do you still have it? Access to it? I would go with what Pitviper said, and if possible, bring that SG with ya as well, as a point of comparison. Have you put new strings on? What gauge strings? Does it sound bad all over the neck, or only in certain spots? Are the pickups original? Do they both sound "bad"? Could be a clunker, but highly doubtful. Most likely needs a really experinced tech to give it some TLC.
