Not as clean as others sold recently. I think the tuners were replaced as they're not perloid.

Thanks,

Did some "photoshopping".. Correct me if I am wrong..clearly the controls have been turned "around", EQ knobs are above, and vol & tone are near the rim..that "blemish" seems to be some kinda lens flare, switces might or might not be there..(tri-sounds, I mean) BUT the tailpiece is not "QuickChange" but normal bar-type instead.. Still not "great issues" considering that price. If the electronics are still there..

From a player's point of view, I'd prefer a tone knob rather than relying on just the eq....

From a collector's point of view, they're very rare...

It's an AR series, I would assume it has a smooth heel.

Is it not one of those 'transitional' models? How many 1980's had Super 80's?

Damn. For that price I would have bought it - but by the time I got home it was sold!

Oh, well - My most wanted guitar is a '77 2619, so I'll need to hold on to my money for that anyway...

Michael, the AR400 is a "true" transition model, it is a 2622 thin-body smooth heel guitar, guess they used all old 2622 bodies to make those... :-)

Six - Good question, wish I had a good answer. Seriously, the 2619 I want is the one with the abalone binding.

If I understand correctly (always a dubious prospect) the 2619's with abalone binding were made from late '76 to mid '77. Please feel free to correct me if I'm wrong - and if there were any other significant differences I'd love to know what they were (I am under the impression from what I've read that there were some changes in the heel over the course of the 2619's run before the transition to the AR series).

I haven't run across a full spec list of the the changes in the 2619's from '76-'79, pre AR series, so if I've missed a previous thread or if you've got any details feel free to post or to e-mail me. I know about some of the changes, but not all of them. The more I know about these guitars the better.

I love the Artist guitars, and I wish there were a book solely about the development of Ibanez guitars in the 70's and 80's - history, specs, pics - THAT would be a book I couldn't put down! (Is the book, Ibanez - The Untold Story helpful in that regard?)

OK, after some further research it looks like I want two 2619's.

The one I want most is the type 2 with the abalone purfling, 1 coil tap switch, wide Harmono-matic style bridge, etc. This is the model I already knew I wanted, and it's the model that represents the biggest mistake in guitar (non) buying that I've ever made (the one I had in my hands, but waited on 12 or so years ago, only to find it sold 2 days later when I decided to go for it - I'm not going to be over that blunder until I actually own one).

I'd also like to get a type 3 with the smooth heel, 2 coil tap switches, Gibraltar bridge & 2 piece cloud tailpiece, etc. There are enough differences in the type 2 & type 3 to make both well worth owning.

Between those two and my AR305 I'd have a nice set!

(Then it's on to the 2617 [antique violin,if possible], 2618, CN200/250, late 70's A.V. Iceman, a set-neck Ibanez LP, and - if I win the lottery - a brown 2671 Randy Scruggs like the one on ebay now. Then I can die happy - after about 50 years of playing them! First things first, though - gotta get the 2619.)

Blimey Rik. You'r big mistake 12 years ago sounds like my big mistake on a Type 1 2619 20 years ago.

A guy in Italy had a Type 1 2619 for sale a couple of years ago. We chatted and I nearly got on the plane to go get it (cheap flights in the UK). I backed out as it had been messed with. An extra coil tap next to the single one. Haven't seen one since then.

What about that 2619 type 2 Hasenobu put up yesterday on a Japanese Auction?

I can't read the auction - I don't have Japanese font on my computer, and I couldn't read the Japanese anyway even if I did. I have no idea how I would go about getting that guitar. (How safe would it be for me to do that anyway? Are there ever any problems actually getting the guitar? I'd hate to send that much money and have to worry about getting the guitar.)

I just don't have any experience making a purchase from a foreign seller that I don't know.

The other thing is that it doesn't look like it has the abalone binding, which was one of the things I wanted. Still, that is a very nice guitar, and I would consider getting it anyway if I knew for sure it was safe and could actually read the listing and communicate with the seller. I just don't know how to get past that - any suggestions?

Well none really other than I thought the Japanese were pretty honorable folk but it is scary I agree.

Can Hasenobu help?

I did e-mail him earlier, but unfortunately that auction already ended. He was very helpful and offered to help me out in the future. (Thanks again Hasenobu!)

My brother is helping me look for a 2619 as well. It's going to happen at some point - I just hope it doesn't take another 12 years.

The bottom line is that these are some excellent guitars with styling that almost makes them works of art - works of art that have tone and playability to spare! It's no wonder there aren't too many people willing to let go of them!

Rik, Check out the thread "Strange Artist" in the Vintage and Custom Electrics section. It's the one I was telling you about from Italy. You'll see the problem with it and why I didn't go for it in the end.

Eric,

Sorry, I read this thread just now! (And I was surprised to see my name mentioned.)

>I wish there were a book solely about the development of Ibanez guitars in the 70's and 80's - history, specs, pics -

Ok, yes, there's one, but unfortunately again, it's written in Japanese!! The book, titled "Japan Vintage Vol3," was issued about 2 years ago.
It features AR models as a main theme, and gives
them 70 pages.
I hear guys from HOSHINO USA who visited the publishing company were so surprised at the book and bought 20 copies on the spot and later ordered 50 more after they went back to the US.

As I was deeply involved in the editting of the book, it's my dream to translate the whole article in the future.
