Who doesn't want to buy a 5000? They are around, if you want to part with obscene amounts of cash!

Mitch, whaddya mean "they are around"? There's like 3 or 4 we know of and who's gonna part with one if they have it? And... what's "obscene"? a $100,000 Les Paul is obscene, yes. You can get an ar5000re for $4K. How is that obscene, taking into account that the ar5000 blows away the Les Paul?

I bought a 2622, IT blows away my les paul. I used to really like my Les paul 'till I got my 2622. Then I got an AR500 from France, should be here monday. How much would a vintage AR5000 cost me? I've begun inquiring into the AR5000RE.
It might be too much for me right now, though, considering it's basically a fancy AR500. But isn't that what makes it cool?

Take a 2622, add tri-sound switches plus a master tone pot and you have the AR500. You can't go wrong!

I recently had someone offer me a 5000. I was told that it would take a "ton" of cash to get him to part with it. I didn't ask how much. I have an RE coming and that is all I need because I plan on playing it. If I were to pay 5 figures (and probably mid 5 figures) for an original, I would be foolish to play it frequently.

Also, about the $100k LP, anyone buying something worth that much isn't really impressed by playability. It is an investment. Sure, there are alot of guitars that play better than a LP. Will the 5000re ever be worth much more than it is now? Who knows. Most of the people buying them want to feel and play what represents an unobtainable guitar. Sort of like what Gibson is doing with all their re-issues. Personally, I don't think any re-issue will become collectable unless something special happens with that particular model that makes it special. The reason Ibanez has so many collectable guitars is that in the 70s and 80s, players bought those guitars and played them. They are great guitars that didn't have the big name. Most were trashed by their owners so that now, 25 years later, there are small numbers of clean peices. The same can be said of most quality guitar makers of the an era.

One should find out what "...a "ton" of cash..." really is before deciding whether it is obscene, right?

One is assuming a lot to say that a 6-digit instrument is only for collecting. My niece is a violin Concert Master in San Francisco and her violin cost $700k in 1995. (No, it is not a Stradivarius. Those would be 7-digits, but they are being played a lot too.) She plays it everyday and travels with it everywhere she goes as it is her one and only violin. Oh yes, she paid $8,800 for her bow back in 1993 and it is used everyday also.

I understand the violin story but truth be told, I would be scared every time I toured with a 7 figure instrument. People you trust become aweful strange when very large sums of money are concerned. I still contend that most 6 figure instruments owned are kept by collectors and not played very often.

That's true in the guitar world, but not in the classical instrument world. You can only develop your technique so far on the cheaper instruments. Those 6 and 7 figure violins (and violas, cellos and double basses) are actually quite a bit more responsive. In the hands of a master, they truly are almost magical. In the hands of a hack, they truly are painful!
