Buy a second hand multi-effect and start experimenting. I have the old Boss ME-5 (metal case). Boss is a brand of Roland/Boss, so the effects will sound like built-in Roland effects. Now one of the products Roland was famous for was the Jazzchorus 120 amp. So, I guess it's mainly the Chorus that you need. You can add some Delay if you want. In the manual you find several presets that consist of mixes of the 5 effects. A few of them are for jazz. They used to be expensive in the GR-1 era (about 60% of a GR-1), but second hand you can find them for less than 150 euro. After the ME-5 followed some newer models in plastic casings like ME-6, ME-30, ME-50. And then came the GT guitar processors like the GT-3 and GT-5. I've seen a second hand GT-3 for €150.= and a GT-5 for €200.= I think these second hand MEs and GTs offer more for your money. Many old small single effects from Boss, Ibanez and Maxon (especially the good ones) have become collectables and they are sold at ridiculous prices. So if you need 2 or 3 you pay even more. Buy them only if you find a real bargain. For a "dry" sound you should use .011 flatwound strings, in order to loose some overtones. It's all a matter of personal taste of course. The character of the amp itself is important too. I'm a big fan of Polytone amps. But you could try some Chorus, some Delay and flatwound strings through the neck pu only. For $99US, you can get any combination you want... at 128b/s. I don't know how much Zoom improved since then, because I stopped buying multi-effects. I have two for guitar and a Korg AX-1B for the bass. I think that's enough. Oh, and I have a Morley Bad Horsie. $99.= sounds like a real bargain to me. I'd like to hear them... some day (music shops are dangerous places for me).
