Price permitting is a good phrase to keep in mind navigating these waters. Every time I see the model GR303 come up for sale it sells for quite a lot. Seems everyone wants to play the model Pat Metheny uses. Now funny thing is the GR808 which is the fancier version of this guitar has more trouble selling. People still grab them up but they don't get the premium price the GR303 does. Remember you still need the GR300 blue box snyth AND cable to get that tone...

Figure at least a Grand American.

More than I hoped but still do-able.
I saw King crimson years ago, and Robert Fripp was playing one(black, if memory serves).
They were way out of my price range then, but the desire remains.

Well having owned a couple of the GR808s and one or two GR505s let me temper your enthusiasm a little from experience. The GR808s are weird birds, there is only one tone and volume control that handles both pickups - the others work the synth setup, so if you plan on using it as a regular guitar they're a little limited in what tones you can get. Unlike a LP.
If you do get a GR303 or 808 you have to also have a good working GR300 and cable setup and learn to master that. Pat Metheny is a master guitar player and his tone is a combination of all that gear and his unique amp and speaker setup.

Sometimes one derives more pleasure listening to a master like PM than to try emulating his sound... I remember reading a post on his Pat Metheny Listener Network website where someone talked about seeing him in a small club in Russia while he was touring there. He was asked to come up on stage and play at a gig and he used the rig a guitar player in the band had. Really lousy stuff - not anything like what we would tolerate buying and using. He sounded great... WHY ?? Because no matter what he plays it's his talent and hands getting that signature sound of his...

None the less good luck on your quest.

Honestly, I would'nt recognise a piece of Pat Metheny's music if you hit me over the head with it.
For me jazz is like audio valium.

Camulus,
Well you're surely missing something good then. Pat Metheny and (and his band) have already grabbed up 17 Grammys...

Camulus,

Jazz akin to Audio Valium huh ?? Well that's an enlightened statement.

MIGHT not be a bad idea to school yourself on the possibilities you can wrench out of a GR808 or GR303 by listening to the guy who probably is considered the Master of that instrument. Pat Metheny

Don't get me wrong, I have heard Pat Metheny's work,
and yes, he is a superb musician. It just doesn't do anything for me.
The GR users that I've listened to are more in the Steve Hackett, King Crimson vein, and not, thankfully Jimmy Page's brief fling with a GR303.

Camulus,

I have a full GR808 system I was going to list on Ebay next week.
I have Gr808 w/ orginal case, the G300 synth unit and cable, the roland midi converter and a custom foot pedal that can control some of the other effects and filters.
I am going away for the weekend but will be back on Tuesday. Send me an email if you're interested and I'll send you some pictures when I get back.
cheers
