What leads to this kind of wear?

How in the world does a guitar neck fretboard get so grooved and fret-worn? I mean, are we talking just outrageous amounts of playing, or mistreatment? I just don't get it. I have seen frets worn like that but not fretboard. I remember that somebody warned that cheap strings "eat" frets and fretboard long long time ago. Juha
