I thought it might be fun to compare a little information. I own a 1981 Vintage 300 model that when I bought it the lower edge of the bridge had been loose from the sound board for some time. I played it for almost 8 months like that. I actually slivered several popsicle sticks until I got a few shims I could glue between the bridge and the board.
Finally, I got sick of 3/16 action at the 12th fret and took it down to a luthier who for $40.00 removed the distorted bridge, steamed it, and reglued it. He shaved the thing a little, before glung it on. It has stayed put since then and my action went to 1/8th inch at the 12th fret.
A few weeks ago I took more stock off my saddle and got the action to 3/32 inch at the 12th fret.
The saddle is custom made by me of buffalo horn that I bought on ebay. It is double width (.186 thick) The original saddle was plastic or tusq - I am not sure. The second was a cow bone saddle I made by supergluing 2 3/32 wide slabs together. I love the buffalo horn for its transmission to the sound board.
In each case of my making my own saddle, I used the factory original to get the compensation right. I believe it is ballpark close, and recently decided that when using my tuner I believe the low e has a tendency toward flat which seems to indicate the compensation needs to be closer to the bridge pin.
Any amateure luthiers comments or experimenters feedback would be great. |
