I have a Starfield acoustic, purchased new about 23yr's ago for about $280.00- M# 0-698-M This guitar is a Gibson copy of the 1950's era J body, jumbo.Looks just like the Gibson, even the pickguard mimics the flower and vine pattern. This guitar is very well constucted.
I'm considering installing a EMG style bridge pickup, but dont want to alter the guitar if it has any $$$$ value other than my fondness for the old girl. Other than a few battle scares this guitar looks good, plays easy, and sounds great.I found some information that suggest's that this guitar may have came out during the mid 70's when Hoshino/Ibanez were putting out replicas of Gibsons and Fenders.Any body have any
info that might be of help.I have heard of a few electrics w/ the Starfield logo, but nothing yet on the acoustic.????????

Hi there Blues - read my postings under the heading Which is the best Ibanez acoustic ? There are pictures of the Ibanez 698 both mine and the catalog scan from 1974 which shows the pg design you are referring to. Not very many of these were ever produced under the Starfield headstock as far as I can ascertain.
I wouldn't worry too much about the pickup having any real impact on the value for two reasons. (1) I have under saddle passive Fishmans on all my acoustics as these installations involve no holes and the guitar can be returned to original in a matter of minutes. Does mean you really need to use an external preamp but it's a minor inconvenience. (2) The relative prices being achieved for these axes is still low (the last 698 I saw was passed in at US$355).
Hope this helps you
Cheers

Hi Russ- thanks for the input,I'll look into the
Fishman pickups. The serial number dates my guitar
as March 1977 production.I'll try to get some
pics in the posting or mabey I'll send them to
you if you care to put them in your posting. We
can never have to many guitars to look at.
Thanks again,Ed.
