Hi

i have a v300bs ibanez acoustic which I baught a couple of months ago. I don't have the serial number with me now but I'd like to know what kind of strings I can use on it. I'm still new at guitar playing. Can you possibly tell me waht kind of strings I'll be able to use with this guitar which won't break it's neck. Is it also worth it to fit a pick-up?

Thanks

Staalburger:

It's hard to say what strings you *should* buy, because there are so many brands and guages. If you are concerned about damaging the neck, don't be, just make sure you buy acoustic strings. They'll come in bronze and other composite materials. Some will be more expensive than others. I'd start out with a middle of the road (price-wise) set.

As far as guage goes, my guess is the guitar is setup for string sets that start (the high E string) around .012" (0.30mm) and go up to (for the low E string) around .054.(1.37mm). You can get them lighter or heavier. The guages for the in-between strings are usually different for each manufacturer. For example, here's what Martin gives you on their "regular" sets:

6-STRING ACOUSTIC GUITAR 80/20 Bronze Wound

GAUGE 1 2 3 4 5 6
Extra Light.010.014.023.030.039.047
Light.012.016.025.032.042.054
Medium.013.017.026.035.045.056

If you want to see a good selection of manufacturers, the specs and the relative prices, check out: http://www.juststrings.com/acousticguitar.html

In any case, the sound of any new strings is always a pleasure...regardless of brand or nuances in the guages. You just gotta try them out to see what "sound" and "feel" you like.

"Is it also worth it to fit a pick-up?" Do you have (or intend to buy) an amp or PA? Do you want to record your acoustic?

You'd have to have a reason for one for me to say: "yeah, it's worth it." Otherwise, I'd say no.

Hi

Thank you very much for the response. My main concern about the strings was damaging the neck but my fears are put to rest. As for the pick-up, I'd like to record the guitar. Can you recommend something for someone on a budget?

Thank you very much.

Staalburger:

I don't know too much about acoutic pickups. I know there are some that clip into the soundhole and so they are not permanent. These are probably cheapest because they don't require expert installation.

I think the big thing is to make sure the input jack takes the place of the endpin (where the strap button is). This way, you are not making any extra holes in the guitar.

Hopefully, someone else here will have some experience and suggestions.
