Having been slack of late and not follwoing these posts as much as I would like to, I have noticed a large number of questions about various model acoustics.

Whilst far from an expert on the subject, the pre 1985 models are a special interest to me and I have been studiously gathering data from my own catalogues, rusty brain and other resources.

The enclosed tables represent the knowledge I have managed to gather although I am sure there is plenty of other information around on the topic.

Please feel free to add any missing information into this thread where there are gaps in the table and I will update them accordingly.

Cheers
Russ

Wow, thanks for the great amount of info, Russell! I wonder if anyone has any info on the AE-series to add to this, especially the older AE models?

Best,

Michael

Hi Russelw,
I have a concord 670.
Can you tell wich wood is used for the top.
I think its solid fine grain spruce?
What is Rock maple?

I think I might be able to answer the maple question. It may be a specific species, but it seems like whenever I see a guitar that is stated as using "rock maple" this just means maple that has no flame or figure. Usually, it also has a considerable amount of crossgrain appearance to it, which is also seen in other woods, such as spruce.

Best,

Michael

Once again, I'm speculating, but I would say that birdseye maple falls into the category of "figured" maples, along with flame and quilted maple.

Best,

Michael

I suspect the 670 is a maple top but I don't have that confirmed and thus didn't state it.

Rock Maple is actually a maple that comes from a specific tree - namely the North Amercian Sugar Maple (Acer Saccharum). It is used because it is very hard (thus the common name) and has a nice grain.

Birdseye Maple comes from the same tree but usually gets the name if it is more heavily figured.

The flamed maples usually (but not always) come from the Ambrosia Maple (Acer Ambrosia) which is also usally highly figured.

Quilted Maple comes from the Oregon or Big Leaf Maple (Acer Macrophyllum) and we are all familiar with this highly prized and figured material.

Less common (but still seen) are Burl Maples which also originate from the Big Leaf Maples and which feature a swirl pattern in their grain.

Russell,

You seem to know just a little about this subject :) so I have a follow-up question to what you've posted. The birdseye maple I've seen has a very characteristic "birdseye" pattern to it. Since it comes from the same species of maple as rock maple, do you know what causes this pattern? A non-fatal disease or infestation, perhaps? Or is it a pattern already there, but just not obvious? I have a guitar made from rock maple, with no evidence of a birdseye pattern in the grain. Just curious.

Best,

Michael

Michael,

The "Birdseye" is indeed caused by an infection. I don't think it's life threatening for the tree, it just causes an anomaly in the growth pattern.

Cheers
Steve

Conventional wisdom did indeed believe that birdseye, along with many other fiures in wood were the result of disease but this view has been changing over the last decade or so and it is now believed that only some burls may result from disease.
In the case of birdseye there are thought to be at least two things that contribute:

1. Locally restricted growth - where a limb is stopped from growing by physical obstruction where the rest of the tree continues to grow. This is where the indentation that forms birdseye comes from.

2. Climate and soil conditions. This view is strongly supportted by the fact that the sugar maple from the Northern areas frequently exhibits birdseye but never from the Southern areas.

Unfortunately very little real research exists in this area and most of what there was happened in the 1930's.

Cheers
Russ
