I know that somewhere there is a table of serial number decoding, but my search has been fruitless. Can anyone help a brother out with:

I think there have been comments about the subject. But I'm not sure if there has a definitive discussion or listing of acoustic serial number translations.

On the older models (sometime before the 90s), I've found that the first two numbers represent the year. In this case, '82.

After this time period, I look for two numbers that could indicate a year and then I check the catalog for that year, to verify.

Whoa! That's got 8 digits plus the letter suffix. It looks like nothing I've seen on an Ibanez. Can you describe the guitar?

Hey John, did you get that file I sent with the serial number info?

Cheers
Steve

Steve:

Yes I did. I sent you an email back asking some questions.

Thanks for the help, John. I was kind of thrown on this one because usually the letter comes first, not last. Anyway, it's an acoustic guitar AE-500, looks kind of like a Gibson L-00 model. I am trying to figure out whether it's from the early 80's or when?

I should learn to pay more attention to the topic. Being an acoustic changes the whole scene on the serial number deal.

Note to self: Self, PAY ATTENTION!

:) ...... :) ...... :)

Steve, can you figure out what year it is? I hope so cause I can't!

Ericcson:

Sorry, I don't know what an L-00 looks like.

There are pictures of an AE line in the '84-85 Acoustic catalog. No AE500, though. For the most part, are they are single cutaways with electronics and oval soundholes. The AE300 is a dreadnaught with more of a flat shoulder than a cutaway. Do a keyword search on AE-500 and you'll see some pictures.
