I asked the guy for the serial number and this was his reply:

"Yes, there is a serial number on the back of the headstock. I can not give you that number for security reasons. The neck and frets are fairly clean. Additional pictures are at http://www.vintagerock.com/lanny_cordola/lcguitars _07.html"

Huh?

"Security reasons"?

Yeah, well, if I don't see some closeup photos and a serial number, I ain't bidding. That's my response to him.

Something fishy indeed.....Security reasons huh? Doesn't exactly encapsulate the spirit of ebay does it? As for the blue...Well..eh....I've seen worse refins..

I gave the guy a little bit of grief and he sent me the first three characters of the serial number: H76

So, the auction states 1979

The URL he gave states 1981

And it's actually a 1976

That doesn't bode well for information accuracy.

The photos he used in the auction look like the ones from the web site.

At least one of those was prior to the Kahler mod.

Maybe it's just blue magic marker over a minty Korina finish, and you can just wipe it off?

;-)

If there was ever a 'Fatwa" issued in the guitar world it would have to be on the guy that brought Kahler locking trems into this world....and on those DIYers that gouged out endless amounts of wood on their solidtops to fit one

Well, I can understand these security reasons, because this guitar has its specific value because it was HIS. And we don't want to see it reproduced with the same serial number for $110.-
H76 is indeed August 1976.
This only shows that Lanny Cardola doesn't care about the Ibanez collectors value. He probably just remembers vaguely when he bought it. "Wasn't that when I just joined band X and I just broke up with girl Y and felt so blue that I thought, let's paint the dang thing blue..." (or something like that).

Anyway, he played with Rudy Sarzo (Ozzy Osborne and Whitesnake) for a short time, so he probably expects that that makes the guitar a collectable, like the strat Jimi set on fire (not a standard finish either).
He could be right, I don't know anything about that scene. Perhaps Harry knows...

OK, this isn't as bad as EVH taking a chainsaw to one (steady boy, steady) but it was a 70s Korina.

To Cordola, it was probably just a guitar.

*sigh*

There should be a test required to own any of the Golden Oldies.

Korina, Korina... This thing is NOT made out of Korina (limba wood), but from ASH.
I find the effect of the see-through blue in the performance just beautiful, better then when it would have been old amber clearcoat. Compared to the Gibson originals the Ibanez was cheap. Nobody expected them to become collectibles.

Sorry, Ginger, that was just sloppy semantics on my part.

I know the Ibanezes were not really made out of Korina wood but it's a lot more succinct than saying Korina-colored laquer.

Let's start the old argument....

I think they were actually made of Japanese Sen, which was sometimes erroneously called Japanese Ash in the USA.

Sen is not true North American Ash nor is it even related.

If you go to:

http://hobbithouseinc.com/personal/woodpics/sen.ht m

you can see the various wood grain patterns from differing cuts of Sen and it looks just like the wood grain in the Destroyers.

Also, from just a conceptual level, it never made sense to me that a Japanese instrument maker trying to make inexpensive copies would import North American wood.

It would just be too expensive.

FWIW: the world according to Pete.

I know it's actually Sen. But under a translucent finish, whether it's blue, natural, or crimson red (like these Mexican Super Strat Deluxe with the extra switch), the optical effect is "Ash flames from under the finish" and I like that. I think that in the hardrock scene a translucent blue contributes more to the performance than natural, which is better for a blues act. But that's my personal feeling when I see Lanny in this setting. But I'm glad, he didn't cut shark teeth out of the body.
Nice woodpics BTW, and thanks for clearing me up about Sen NOT being related to Ash.
It's the same misunderstanding as with Jacaranda and Rosewood (not related either).

As much as it pains me to admit it, I actually like the translucent blue, too.

The wood grain showing through is what makes it.

If it had been an opaque blue or if the wood grain was not as pronounced, then it wouldn't work for me.

I just wish he had chosen another guitar to refinish.

To me, this is like taking a Ferrari 250 GTO and dropping a big block Chevy into it.

*shudders*

Ebay Item #170154161886

It's kind of hard to see that miniscule picture but it looks like they tried to Hendrixize the paint job.

I don't know if it's paint or stickers, but someone took a chainsaw to the butt end of the guitar.

looks like a bad imitation of clapton's "the fool" SG. if they hadn't cut it, you can always have it restored.

Big Blue sold for $511 (USD).

Now, if we could just get the prices of the rest of them down that much....
