Hi folks, some may have read my previous posts - I'm a new-born owner of an ibanez paula.

I'd like to share some pics and ask some questions about the condition of this fine lady and how I could/should/shouldn't try to repair/restore some parts of it...here we go, enjoy...:

IMG_2848.JPG
the body...I like the colors :-) the tailpiece is brand new, seems it's the only non-vintage part.

IMG_2850.JPG
The potiknobs. They seem original, only a few scratches...

IMG_2858.JPG
Detail of the PUs. The screws of the PU frames are all rusty...I'd like to replace them. Any tips on this topic? Are these screws easily available?
Are the PUs original at all?

IMG_2853.JPG
the headstock. Looks fine to me :-)

IMG_2854.JPG
One of the mayor "dingdongs" at the backside of the body. Should I fix this in any way? If yes...what possible ways would be there?

IMG_2855.JPG
The backside of the body. No bindings as on the front side. Well... that's ok...

IMG_2850.JPG
The backside of the headstock. The tuners seem original and almost in perfect shape. No rust here. There's even the "made in japan" sticker on it. I that "original"?

IMG_2857.JPG
The case it came with. REAL vintage! :-)

Rastapanda,

Great looking 2386 you have there.

Apart from maybe replacing the rusty screws, the only thing you might do is touch up the dings on the back with a little bit of nail varnish and enjoy playing her like she is.

Hi Snow,

Nail Varnish...well that's an interesting idea.
I just cleaned her and added some new strings...but since it's 2am here I can't play her loud.

One question about the screws:
Any idea whether I might have difficulties in finding fitting ones?
Where should I look for them?

Look up your nearest bolt sales business. they usually sell just about everything. Usually the hard part is finding the right size head. Otherwise your music store may have spares.
The worst is if the thread is rusted to the winder plate inside on the pup. Leave them unattended, it may freeze the thread.

Yo dudes,

I took my Cherry Sunburst Les Paul to the make up counter at the local Boots store - it only had a small chip on the front. The girls there took great pleasure trying to match the colour - they must get fed up selling the stuff to women

Hallo Rastapanda !!

Hi Medlocke,

Rastapanda's pickups are the original ones on his 2386. No doubt about it.

Hi Medlocke,

hum...one additional technical question concerning those pickups:

After playing several times loud I found out that those PUs tend to feedback...more than my seymour duncans, and I wonder if thats a PU problem or maybe a bad (whats the english word?) "shielding" of the electric elements...

Any ideas? Or similar experiences?

Might be your pups need to be waxpotted. Give it a try. Some of my arched tops have the feedbackproblem as well, even with freshly potted pups. If this is the problem, I am afraid it is a permanent issue.

I thik its interesting that these two guitars were build only a month apart and look at the differences. Althouh they are both set neck LP's...Different hardware, different HS Logo, Different binding (my guitar is bound on the back too, like a LP custom) and -most of all-different pickups...

Hi there,

There's another beautiful 2386 on ebay at the moment. It's from '72, also a leftie and yes, it's teasing me to bid for it.
Its not as original as my charlotte, but maybe you guys wanna share some comments about it with me?

http://cgi.ebay.de/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&ih=002&item=120040049385&rd=1&sspag ename=STRK%3AMEWA%3AIT&rd=1

thank you.

Ah by the way - I will give this waxpotting-idea a try I guess.

A lefty setneck. A rare bird.

Here's the ICW-friendly version of the ebay link. Please use it to access the auction page and place bids:

Here's the story Pit: Bought in 1972 and gigged often by professional musician. Supercondition. Missing toggleswitch knob. Bridgepup is a Bill Lawrence with coilsplit toggle between pots. (Neckpup looks non-original to me too. Paul) Always kept in its included hard shell case.

Me thinks it is a very early 2386, which would make it an arched top. I think the burst on the back of the body is weird. Usually it is teardrop shaped like on the front of the body. The back is round.

Thanks Paul...she looks good to me and would love to restore it to it's original self. The back does look weird as you mentioned...you think a possible refinish? I wonder how the leftys were made and by who...wonder if there were specific people designated to construct them and by what standard.

Anywho, too bad I have to pass it up...if it were from someone here I might jump at it...but overseas is a major problem if anything goes wrong. Sigh...ah well, I still have my Gibby.

well, it went for over 800 Euro, which I think is a high price - compared to the price I paid for mine.

('77 instead of '72 and a bit more minor damage to the body but it's almost completely original, from the PU's down to the rusty screws. And I paid 200€ less.)

damn...

This weekend I giged with some friends on a marshal amp...and my ibanez squeaked just like a horde of singing mice.

I really wonder why...

I have a 2386 and I have had some feedback problems, too. First, it was some home-made pick-up covers vibrating. Also, I have been told that because the 2386 is hollow - or rather, has more hollow space inside it than your average Les Paul - this might have something to do with it.

Otherwise, the waxpotting idea is the usual answer.

Is it microphonic? I mean, when you plug her in and tap the body, do you get a sound through the amp or not? When this happens to me, I just re-wire the guitar, because I am no expert and go on the accidental solution principle.
