Hello all. A newbie here.

Picked this bass up yesterday. Link is to a webpage with ohotos. It doesn't say Ibanex at all. No Serial Numbers. Just Cimar on Head and Made in Japan on neck plate.

Any help is appreciated.

Thanks in advance.

Hello Hawkster - I can't help in dating your bass, but it looks in beautiful condition.

From what I know, it's definitely from the Fuji Gen factory - Cimar was a brand used by Hoshino, the company which owns the Ibanez name.

It does look a lot like pictures I've seen of Ibanez Silver Series Jazz basses - although I don't think they had the skunk stripe on the neck.

Hopefully someone a little more knowledgeable than me can help.

Jon.

I have an Ibanez JB myself. This is the 2nd JB sunburst I've seen with an ash body. Though mine is probably some earlier and has a rosewood fingerboard. I'm very glad to see yours. I think these ashbodied ones are pretty rare. Is your body one piece?

Thanks for the info.

As far as the body being one-piece: I think so, I cannot see where a seam may be.

The finish is a little pock marked, but in very nice condition.

I got it from the pawn shop with the nylon wound strings shown, but the neck needs adjusting seriously. These strings are pretty heavy and may be part of the problem.

May I ask what you paid for this beauty?

$180 USD, I hope I didn't do badly.

That's very cheap! Concerning that the ashed body are pretty rare and the "normal" mahogany bodied normally goes for around $300. But maybe these Cimars are cheaper than Ibanezes? Anyhow, you did very well.

I bought mine for 350 Euro by the way.

By the way. I think the body is a 4 piece body. But that's normal with Ibanezes.

Ok, I just finished giving it a good cleaning. Under a good light source, I can see three pieces. Two seams. I may be mistaken, since the darker edge towards the controls makes it difficult to tell.

I'd love to see some pictures of yours as well.

Thank you.

I still don't know how to post pictures, so I only posted links. The 2nd link is me pictured on a jamsession. I changed the electronics for a J-retro active preamp.

Thanks for the pictures. Very nice.

These things are addictive aren't they?

Anyway, any idea when these were made, or how to determine when?

Your JB is a very accurate copy. I think it's from '77 concerning it's similarities with the challenger series. But this is a guess, really.

These basses are awesome in playability and sound. A little heavy, though.

Hi Hawkster - just a question.

What are the pickups like on your Cimar? I have a CSL Jazz (made at Fuji Gen) from about '79/80 which has pickups with rounded ends rather than the squared ends on standard Jazz pickups. I'm sure I've seen Cimars like this & was just wondering which yours had.

I'll post a thread about my CSL once I work out how to post images on this forum!

Thanks,

Jon

Thanks for that, Hawkster - as I suspected, the mysterious round-ended Jazz pups, which appear on CSLs, Cimars, CMIs and presumably numerous other Fuji Gen basses! Anyone know if these appeared on Ibanez jazzes?

Also note the pickup is quite a bit closer to the bridge than on a "real" Jazz - my CSL is like that also.

Jon.

Just been reading through the Challenger thread - your bass looks very like a '77 Ibanez Challenger that's on Ebay now:

http://cgi.ebay.com/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&item=7388612944&ssPageName=MERCOSI _VI_ROSI_PR4_PCN_BIX

It has the skunk stripe & round end pickups (that's answered my question) and looks pretty much identical to me.

Jon.
