Evening all,
I have a Byrdland copy but I haven't been able to find a lot of information on these. It doesn't have any label or serial numbers anywhere on the guitar so it's difficult to pinpoint dates or whether or not it's a signed copy. How do I identify some of the key features and tell it's authenticity? I bought it about 6 or 7 years ago in Boston at Bay States Guitars.

I used to have and almost identical guitar. The scratchplate on mine was black if I remember that correctly. One of the guitars I regret letting go.

So how do identify exactly what it is? Is there anywhere I should be looking for any serial number type information?

I've had TWO, one the correct (short) scale, one the normal scale - both blondes. Sold the correct scale to Harry (got it from BLUES) the other to someone I don't know. Interesting your pickguard looks like it's in very good condition. Hmmm... A common problem with that style of pickguard (tortoiseshell-like) is they degas and decay - the short scale Byrdland had degassed and the inside of the top half of the case (right above the pickguard) was hosed up - the plating on the pickups was greened near the pickguard. Still they are awesome guitars. I had my 1st Byrdland and a Gibson Byrdland in the house at the same time (a wine colored '74) and frankly I liked the Ibanez better. Absolutely great guitars !!

Thanks, Mike. Is there any way to tell exactly what it is? Any serial numbers or ways to tell authenticity? How many of these were made?

Strange...there should be a serial number in the back of the headstock....
But the shape of the headstock tells us it has been built somewhere in 1976 or 1977.

It looks like there is a number stamped towards the bottom of the neck on the fretboard that says y07?? |

Ahhh, another mysterious "characters stamped in the fretboard" sighting.  I've got a Scruggs with fretboard stamps and others have reported them, too.
Still haven't gotten the definitive answer about what they signify. |

Well the correct scale ones are "more collectable". I am sure you'll enjoy it. I found a shot of my Byrdlands - the correct scale Ibanez alonside the '74 wine red Gibson... As I said I much preferred the Ibanez.

Thanks for the information - and beautiful guitars btw. I have enjoyed mine for about 7 years now but I might have to part with it. I'm torn as to whether or not I'm able to let it go but we'll see...

If you ever do have to sell it list it here in a thread in the CLASSIFIEDS section before going someplace like eBay. Better to deal with a real fan, an Ibanez BB brother who already knows what he's getting and has a handle on what the going rates are (usually between $1200.00 to $1700.00 depending on the market and demand). Heck I MIGHT want the doggone thing !! LOL... As if I have room for another guitar. |
