I am new to this board and just acquired an Ibanez Challenger. The serial number dates the guitar to September, 1977. It is a Les Paul style guitar, but it does not have a Les Paul headstock. It has a maple neck and fretboard, with a skunk stripe going up the back of the neck. It says "Ibanez Challenger" in old style script, and has 6 in a row tuning pegs, with a Fender style headstock. Can anyone please tell me what model this is? Thank you! }}

Sounds like a Ibanez Challenger neck on a les paul shaped body?

Can we see some pictures of it?

Thanks for the reply. The fit, action, and intonation is perfect. The serial number is CI770002. I don't feel the neck has been replaced as everything is correct vintage. Here is a couple pics: \image {DCSN4715.JPG}, \image {DSCN4716.JPG}, \image {DSCN4718.JPG}

Rockmonster:

There is a limit on the size of the image files that can be uploaded. They must be 50k or less. Looks like you ran into that roadblock. You've got to process them with a software program that can make them smaller.

This LP with a Strat neck sounds familiar. Didn't someone mention this last week? The problem was that the scale length on an LP and Strat are different (24.75 vs. 25.5, I believe) and it would have necessitated a repositioning of the bridge. Pictures sure would help.

The bridge and tailpiece are in original position and have not been changed. The scale length is 25.5

I don't know how to explain what you have, but the Challenger was a Strat only series. I have never seen that body style on any Ibanez LP replica. The hardware is definitely either new or not Ibanez and those pups are funky, too. It's a beautiful mismatch, tho.

Wouldn't it say "Ibanez" on the neck plate... If Ibanez? Anything you can look at inside the body that would give an indication of origin? Seems like too many digits in that serial # too, for Ibanez, but I could be wrong. To me, it would indicate a decent number being produced.

I don't find any markings inside. The pots are marked A500K and each has a capacitor marked 0473, 50/100. The main wiring color is blue. This guitar has awesome sound and action and also what appears to be a coil tap switch. The pickups are not marked that I could find.

Hi all

The neck plate seems alright to me (for a challenger strat): "C" prefix stands for "Challenger", followed by a standard "One letter and 6 digits" serial number. The first to follow after the "C" is not the digit 1, but the letter "I", wich indicates that at least the backplate is from September.
I also think that somehow this is NOT original Ibanez, but a put-together guitar.

Kind greetz,
Harry

The tail piece looks so new, it'd be hard to believe it was an original Ibanez.

Looks like a Challenger neck, on an unknown body? The nut looks to have been replaced on the neck...

That it is. I appreciate all the help & everyone trying to figure out what this is. It's well built, and sounds good, but since I'm actually a bass player I don't have a lot of use for it, although maybe one of you guys will!

I'd be curious to see what's written inside the neck pocket on the body of the guitar. If you wanted to authenticate it, that'd be the next step. :-)

Amazing!!!

It was sold for 1025 dollars!!!!
With not even the slightest guarantee that it is NOT some kind of self-made item!
My doubt about its originality would be way too big to pay that much for it, although I am a fanatic collector.

Well, two people bid it up from $426.00 to $1025.00. Would be interesting to talk to them and see what motivated the bidding war.

Dave: Yes, when I originally saw these pups, I wondered if they were from an Electra or similiar. I was hoping that you had seen them before in your non-Ibanez travels.

The final price blew me away! It makes me think they know something I don't or think they do. Now I wish I had pulled the neck to see inside the pocket.

Amazing. Bodes well for all guitars with Ibanez on the headstock... no matter what it is.

TheRockMonsterI think you would have found a few extra holes on the back of the neck. But hey someone wanted it bad enough. It reminds me of a Ventura ES335 copy I had with a Telcaster neck fitted on. It looked and played well.

Either a scammer or this guitar is in China now.

I think it's a scammer. This guitar was sold to guitartom, a USA ebayer, who started 28th May 2004 and has 100% positive feedback.
Chenwenqin2 is a vague new ebayer, who starts with ZERO feedback and 5 top guitars for $600.23 each: http://search.ebay.com/_W0QQsassZchengwenqin2QQhtZ-1
I think, he's not to be trusted!
A q in a Chinese name has no function at all. It's a fantasy name.
Guitartom bought the guitar June 14th. The time for te scammer's guitars (all 5!) will end tomorrow June 30st. So as he started, he offered something he didn't possess. All this guy has, are photographs of other people's stuff!

Be careful!

Wow, amazing. I would have said it was a Challenger strat neck on a 4 bolt LP body. Now, Ibanez did build LP copies with 4 bolt necks (a friend of mine has a black one just like that one in fact) so who knows ?
