Hi - recently got myself a delicious bolt-on 2350, lefty, black with gold hardware, 2 buckers. In very nice condish indeed. Not a single significant ding on all of it.

No serial no, and with split diamond and large-text 'CUSTOM' TR cover. So my research tells me it must be 73 or 74. Does that sound reasonable? It has the hollow ply top, of course.

Is there any way one can tell if it's a 73 or a 74? Or even a 72?

My other question is: what pups were Ibanez putting on their 2350's in 73 and 74? These are gold, look like buckers to me, are totally quiet, sound wonderful. They're mounted with a single screw on either side. Everything looks totally original on the guitar.

Would it be super-70's?

Anyone know - what are the feetboard inlays made of on these guitars? It isn't pearl, must be something else. Plastic?

:] Fish (got 3 early lefty Ibanezes now, heheh)

Fish...Very nice looking git ! Fantastic shape...I would guess probably a '73/'74 cause I believe the early ones ('72) had a curved detail on the bottom of the fretboard (near the neck pickup) which was later squared off like a Gibson..BTW...that case, which looks to be in very nice shape is probably worth $ too, check out what vintage Gibson cases go for and you will be very suprised-this one looks to be in great shape.

Hi Dave, yes the case is all in one piece apart from one catch partly missing.
Did Ibanez cases from this time have a logo on the outside? This one doesn't have one.

Aha - a Gibson case?? I had no idea. I wonder if the seller had any idea of that! Most likely not. It's probably worth almost as much as I paid for the guitar with case - $400.

This means that the case I got with my other Ibanez lefty guitar (bought just 3 weeks ago, lol) is in fact an Ibanez original. It's brown and has those aluminium rims. Cool!
The guy I bought it from wasn't sure if it was real Ibanez or not.
That guitar is a 1981 lefty AR-300 - but that's a another story, heheh.

Yeap, Gibby case...I have the same one...and the same guitar...except mine is not black. The case is worth some $$ as Dave has stated. The fretboard looks very light..perhaps rosewood. Not sure about that one. Someone else here most likly knows.

The inlays are pearloid.(a form of plastic)

Lefty AR300 huh.......grrrrrrrrrrrrrrrr

I now have a Gibson LP Custom 1990 Lefty as well - funny, it looks just like my Ibanez LP Custom 2350 above - could it be that Gibson have been copying Ibanez?

It's very interesting, having the two side by side. I'm going to be doing closer comparisons of the 2, of course.
----------------------------------------
A question about the 2350 by the way - this one has SERIOUSLY low frets, I'm talking Fretless Wonder Supreme here. They don't look beat, they're just very, very, very low on this guitar.
Anyone else with a 2350 tell me, are your frets also low as hell?
I really like it, actually - at first I was a bit crestfallen, but I soon discovered the low frets give the guitar a character all its own. Very nice to play, great feel. Not quite as easy to do big bends on, you tend to get stuck if you have any nails at all - but apart from that it feels good.
And it's great for long slides and stuff, smooooth.

Yes mine has extremely low action..actually a delight to play for extended periods of time. I was shocked that there was not even one deadspot or hit on any fret postion when played. A true delight for such an inexpensive guitar. Mine is the burst...of which few I've seen...and the sound is...well...pure Ibanez. 'nuff said

Aha! So maybe Ibanez did this on purpose on the early LP Customs, doing a Fretless Wonder on purpose.... very interesting.
You're lefty too, ain'tcha PV?
Wow, sunburst in lefty must be even a whole lot more uncommon than black.
I have a feeling Lespaul has a burst as well. In lefty. In fact, I think he has a black lefty too.

Pit....
I won't get rid of mine, but I see that Paul might help you a hand here.
So Paul, take it away!

I hope you two can come to a nice deal.

Just to remind you Pit: this model has NO massive top. For the rest: this guitar (that's to say: my example) is a great instrument.

Hi Pit

The top is not carved and solid, but is made of some kind of plywood-like material that was bent in shape and glued to the actual body. This causes the sound characteristics to be different from what you might expect from a real Les Paul.

Here's a piccie of two of mine. I am afraid I am not as good an photographer as Harry is but you get the idea.

The 2386 is constructed equal to the Custom Agent and I cannot tell any sound or feel differences between those two models. Like Harry wrote, don't expect a classic Les Paul sound (or weight). Those features bring you to a 2650 or 2651 model but I don't believe they come in lefty.

Bummer..although nice guitars..I want a solid body and a MASSIVE(thanks Harry) top. I already have a Les Paul Custom, but if I get an Ibanez, set neck, solid body...I'm selling the Gibson.

Perhaps down the road if you still want to let it go, we might do some buisness. Could you email me what you want for it anyway?

Hi Snowjays

You think it may be possible for you (when you put new strings on that 2386) to take out the mounting rings and the pickups and make a few pictures of the cavities so that we actually can see the top is solid? It still sounds strange to me and I feel that I need to be convinced by photographic proof....

Harry,
I have never had it apart, but it certainly doesn't have anything hollow inside and weighs twice my 2386. It's a completely different structure to the 2386 and the CA I own. It is due for a new set of strings, so I'll see what I can do.

Hi Snowjays and others

I just wrote you a mail. But to share this matter with others I'll put my thoughts in this thread also.

Because you are definitely referring to the guitar on the right I think I can be quite sure to state that this is NOT a model 2386, but a very early version of what would later become the model 2650 CS. I own a 2650 CS too and it looks very much like your guitar: it has "just" a sunburst, massive top (no tiger stripes), black plastic pup rings and black "treble-rhythm" plate and a set neck. If your guitar would be a 2386, it should have white plastic parts.
Until now I thought these 2650 (set neck Les Paul copies) series appeared in 1976, but yours has a open book headstock (strange enough: no inlay) so it was made way before 1976. According to your story you wrote me off-line the guitar dates from around 1973 and was more or less a promotional issue.
Your guitar has a single binding alongside the body, my 2650 CS has multiple binding.
My guess: it could be a special-made promotional issue or "try-out" from which the 2650 CS evolved as a production model.

Anybody else who wants to shine his light on this one? LesPaul?

Harry,

Look again, I believe this beauty to be "just" an early 2651. That explains all the odd appointments.

Hi Paul

Hmmm...good point. Would explain the single bindings, the trapezoid fretboard inlays and the "no-inlay" headstock.
But the 2651 never came in sunburst, I believe....
As far as I know they came in black, tobacco brown burst and cherry wine.
But since this most likely is an early "try-out" they might just as well have sprayed the thing in sunburst finish....
Ibanez just keeps puzzling me over and over again.
Then again: that's fun, or....?

Here's the pic of the control cavity which shows it's a solid body.
ibanez LP control cavity.jpg
I know that she's not a 2386, and that she was made in 1973.
As i emailed Harry, the original owner claimed it was given to him for promotional reasons.
I can only suspect that a number of these type of guitars were made for some of the larger retailers to promote Ibanez as a quality guitar manufacturers.
