I have a '77 2353 the covers on the super 70's are a little faded....can i remove them? will i give up tone?..give me some of your thoughts please |

Why on earth would you want to take them off?
'A little faded' you say. That's all part of the vintage look. That's one of the things I like best about my older guitars, is they DON'T look new.

One other thing is ...they are placed on with a drop of sorder on each long side and i dont really like the fact that iam heating up the pups..and if i hate the look of it all...guess what? I have to heat'em up again to re-do'em so...is it worth it...i want some input from someone who has did this...captin..doc advise please...i guess if i want a new look..i should buy another guitar ehh...but yes yes i love my 2353...but everyone tell me what ya think...thanks ..Fish...i do get your point..trust me |

I'm with Fishnose here.
Why on earth would you open up the pickups if they're functioning well?
You can only ruin them!
Then they'll need: replating + rewiring + repotting!
If you want a brand new shiny look, you could better replace them and keep the original PUs in the case with the guitar.
A pair of brand new Super 58 PUs would be an option.
Then you'll be doing something that is reversible.
And after you change it back again, you end up with two PU's that sound well in any jazz/blues axe!

Anyway, super70 can easily be uncovered and recovered if desired so. Just remove the small dots of solder by carefully grinding them away. This will avoid any heating problems.
Ginger, why would you replace super70 with super 58, complete different sounding beasts.

Because they're available new and shiny.
My first option would be to do nothing, except rub the covers with a microfibre cloth.
I guessed 2353 is a typo.
Could be 2355 (ES-175 replica).
I wouldn't remove covers on a jazz box.
Super 58s sound jazzier than Super 70s.
If the owner is a really irritated because of the "faded" PUs, it is easier and safer to replace the whole pickup by something new, shiny and good sounding than to remove the covers. If he wants to put them back, he will have to waxpot them to prevent resonance of the cover/ microphonic effects.
After putting the originals back, there's always a good destination for the Super 58s. Everybody loves them in solid electrics and jazz /blues guitars.
But my first option would be to leave everything original if there is no technical necessity for removing/replacing/uncovering anything.

I wouldn't know, since it is your guitar.
There were several LP replicas back in 1977:
2350, 2351, 2341, 2393, 2650.
Often a certain finish colour is combined with a certain type of hardware: gold covered, chrome covered, non-covered.

BTW a standard model is likely a 2351, however, as far as I know they did not come in gold hardware. |

ohhhh well i tried...no luck...trust me on this....it's a tabaco burst 2351 with gold hardware...."77 model bolt on...but i love it. ive had it for about 10 yrs...it does have the sup 70"s very good guitar indeed...sorry i got everyone in such a mixx up...Bill |

It certainly looks like a 2351AV (antique violin)with gold hardware and a missing pickguard to me: trapezoid neck inlays (like LP Standard).
I'm not going to laugh about the upload problem. I can't find John's complete instruction he posted in some thread anymore and it's a serious problem for many members. I didn't upload one picture yet. As an old fashioned guy, I chose an analog Olympus Myu, and the Mrs owns a digital HP camera. She says my photographing sucks, I think digital cameras do. Then she's afraid that if I try to put just a few guitar pics on the laptop, she might loose all the other pics. And you know what? She could be right...
I don't want to know.
I'll take a look at the instructions, as John promised to improve them.
But as a translator I know it's difficult to correct your own work. Because you tend to read what you intended to say, not what you actually wrote. Someone who can't look inside your head, sees what's missing on paper.
Perhaps Ibanezfreak1960 could take a look at it with some 'mental distance', because that's what it takes.

You've obviously got the basics of uploading images down. Now, you just need to get the resizing ironed out. The file size of your image is around 10k, but you have at least 50k to play with. So, you just went a little too far.
Here's a link to a message that has some more info about images and a program called Faststone Image Viewer, which makes reducing images very easy:

I don't know. The most common stripes were "Stars and Stripes" I guess.
They were everywhere: in Vietnam, on the moon.
It can also be "Bear claw" spruce,
or "Belt Buckle birch". |
