I recently removed the pickups from my 2350 and noticed that one said "Super 70's" on the bottom plate and the other had no markings whatsoever. Both are black open coil humbuckers and look similar, although not exact - it's hard to tell because of aging - the're a little beat. Anyway, just wondering if all Super 70's pickups have that inscribed on the bottom or if some were unmarked? It's very possible that it's a non-stock pickup since a few other things had been changed on the guitar before I bought it.

I have a pair of gold-covered Super 70's. Both are stamped "Super 70". In addition, both have the same number 6-digit number on the back in black.

I've had 2 sets of Super 70s without engraving, one set of exposed coil zebras in my 2387DX Flying V, and one set of chrome covers from a 2354 SG. Both sets had 5 digit serials, the same font/size as the 5 digit serials on my engraved Super 70s.

Let me clarify: "Super 70" is engraved on the back of the pup. The 6-digit serial number is stamped in black ink on the back. The gold covers are not engraved (ie: no logo) and the have 6 pole adjustment screws. There are two height-adjustment screws.

Thanks for your reponses.
My pickup that has Super 70 engraved on the back also has a serial number stamped in black ink: 26329
The other one has no markings at all, except that someone wrote in magic marker: 7.8, which I'm guessing is the output that someone measured. The more I look at it, the more I'm thinking it's a non-stock replacment pickup.

Incidentally, does the serial number on the Super 70 (26329) give any indication of the year of the guitar? I still haven't been able to nail that down. There's also a lot more info on this guitar down further on this forum where I described it in detail and made a few embarrasingly unsucessful attempts to post some pics of it a few months back.

There has got to be a way for me to post pictures that are not so small? The only way to get them to come up is to reduce them to where they are completely useless.
I'll try again.

Oh well, I tried. That unmarked pickup could have been the pickup that usually goes into the Greco guitars from the same era, same as the super 70 with out the stamp.

Strat78:

With the right software, it's easy to make larger images with small file sizes. Have you checked out the info in the How to Prepare Pictures for Viewing on the Internet FAQ?

Use MSPaint to scale them up. They just need to be below 100K.

Thanks very much for all the info, pics, etc.- much appreciated.

The back of my super 70 that was in the bridge looks exactly like the back of the one in the photo above.
The mystery humbucker that was in the neck with no markings looked to a repair guy at the local music store like a bridge humbucker. A number of other details about the guitar were different, like a set of gold Grover tuners on a guitar with all chrome hardware, different knobs, etc. So I assume a previous owner did some things to it, possibly including a neck pickup swap. I'd imagine that since there was one super 70 in there that it probably came with both originally.

The neck humbucker, whatever it is, sounded really bad, so I replaced it temporarily with a Seymour Duncan Jazz I had sitting around from another guitar. It sounds great in there and I'll see about eventually putting in another Super 70. I also replaced the gold tuners with chrome locking Sperzels and installed chrome covers on the pickups. The guitar is awesome and I've been getting a rave reviews on it's sound from people I jam with, including a serious Ibanez collector.

What I meant by my post is that I have owned 2 sets of Super 70s without engraving on the back of them. The zebra exposed coils in my 2387DX, and a pair of chrome covers out of a 2354, both had no engraving on the backplate, but did have the same font/size 5 digit inkstamp as my other SG (2345W) pickups that do have engraved backs.

Strat,

The "odd" Super 70 is just a bit older. It has the typical old flat screw pole pieces MAXON made in those days... my estimate 1972-1974.

(I guess Dave_G can be more exact, because as the Sultan he has the biggest hareem and the most material with Super 70's of us all.)

They used the same pole pieces for the Fender humbucker imitation in the neck position of my Kasuga Tele Custom. The rounded heads came later, like we still see them in the Super 58's came later. What I know for sure, is that in 1976 the rounded heads were present.

Don't worry: the the flatted head Super 70's are real, just older.

I'm very surprised to see: "Two coils in series out-of-phase virtually eliminates all hum".

1) Are Super 70's really wired out of phase? That would surprise me greatly. Or, are they just saying that you can wire them out-of-phase, with a 4-wire version of the Super 70?

2) Out-of-phase results in a thin tone with less volume and is not hum-cancelling. That statement just seems wrong.

It all seems contrary to my Super 70 experiences.

Thoughts?

Great pictures, though. Thanks for posting!

The coils are out of phase, cancelling the hum, but since the magnetic polarity of each coil is also opposite, they are in phase. This is true of all standard humbucking pickups modeled after the Gibson design.
