Has anyone ever seen a strat-style Ibanez that has the body & headstock carved in a Chinese dragon motiff on the face of it? It appears to be from mid-70's, & is in a natural finish. The Ibanez logo is carved into the headstock. Are they rare & any idea of a value?
Thank you, Dave

The only ones I've seen were Aria's -- brown body with extensive carving, white pickguard, maple neck with a '70s style large headstock if I remember correctly... haven't seen one since the late '70s; certainly sounds rare, but as for value I have no idea.

These were part of the Ibanez Custom Series made in 1974. This series included the Custom Agent and the Black Eagle bass. The carved guitars were the Artwoods, with bodies carved in Taiwan. I'm not sure, but I suspect this was at the same place as the Arias, but don't know (Aria-made dragons also turned up with the Univox brand). The No. 2408-1 was carved with a dragon. The Artwood No. 2408-2 was carved with I believe they're acorns with lots of leaves, similar to Guild's S-100s of the time, although, the little fruits also look like pineapples! The No. 2408-3 was carved with an eagle. All had white pickguards with three single-coil pickups and strat-style vibratos. Unfortunately, production records don't go that far back, but these are probably pretty rare birds.

Guys,

I have received correspondence from a fellow called Chin who I believe lives in Asia. He has just recently picked up a carved Ibanez Strat. I hope to find out more about it so that possibly we can share the info and photos here.

Regards,

Mark

Mark and Spiro,

I know, it was some time ago, but what info did Chin supply? Can you help Harry on this one?
