Just got my third Ibanez, a cream '76 LP Custom replica. Also have a '77 cherry sunburst Custom and a black '80 Artist.

The new one has its share of dings. Someone dumped the Ibanez red star tuners (what are these called?) for Gibson-manufactured Grovers and the pickups for some Gibsons (480/490?). A couple of spidery cracks at the pocket. Yellowing is pretty even. Sounds and plays great though. Was curious about a couple of things on the latest guitar.

Binding

On the back binding, there are only two black plies, as compared with the three on my '77 and on the top of the body of the '76. Is this an error? Or was this one way that the Gibsons appeared? Also, these black stripes, are they real binding or are they some sort of paint in a very short rout?

Control Knobs

Bought it over the 'Net and was disappointed when it came with taller Pilgrim hat knobs that look like those on a Fender amplifier. Went right out to get black speed knobs, but at the store I saw several '70s Gibson LP Customs (as well as various SG models) with these knobs. I'll likely change them because they're so hideous, but I was astonished to find that these appear to have been stock on some Gibsons in the 70s. Who can talk about this?

Cheers then,

Liam

Liam,

The knobs you are talking about were found on nearky all the replica LP Models and were used by Gibson as well. Do what I do when it comes to the LP's. All the hardware on them is interchangeable with new GOTOH hardware which is more useable and keep the original stuff locked away.
Replacement bridges in GOTOH are :

Model no. GE101Z Tailpiece
Model no. GE103B-T Tunamatic Bridge..

If it has the older Nashville there is also a replacement.

Model no.GEB30G

And the Binding is plastic but.......
it is only about 2mm thick and is'nt actual strips of binding as you would find on other guitars.
