There is a Red Ibanez Maxxas for sale on my local Craigslist. The owner said he purchased it new in 1988. I don't know much about these, but from the reviews I have read, it seems kind of rare. He is asking $450.00. Does that seem reasonable? Anyone with information, please let me know. I may want to buy this but I am not sure.

In July, one sold on the UK eBay for 800 pounds (~$1,600) so I'd say if the condition is great, you should jump on it.

Thanks Chuck...

The seller just lowered the price to $350 if I am interested. Couple dings on the body but color matched with paint from Ibanez. He said the luthier who did the repair didn't do a great job and they are kind of noticable. I think I just may have to go have a look at this one. I think the time I am spending on this site is going to be dangerous for my GAS attacks!

Hmm... Back in 1988 there was only one model on the Dutch pricelist: the MX3 (that's not a Mazda) for ƒ2,195.- (which would be €995.-, which would be $1360.- today).
So any price under 50% ($680.-) is good (considering the dings). A minty one would be worth about 2/3 (nearly 67%) so about $920.-
This guitar was just 100 guilders cheaper than a JP20 an AM200 or a JEM7. So, it's indeed a special and valuable guitar.

Good luck,

Ginger

OK...

I couldn't resist after seeing your feed back. I went and looked and he had even overstated the "dings". There is one very small one on the front that is color matched and somewhat noticeable and one even smaller one on the headstock that is even less noticeable. I bought it on the spot before someone else could. I assume he did no homework in looking at what this is really worth. Here are the photos.

Well there she is.... Last photo is with my soon to be departed CA 2405. (Going to an ICW member...Guess who???)

I am going to be posting the Maxxas in the classified section for ICW members to get the first shot at owning my little treasure find.

Email me if interested.

Ginger...

What constitutes a "Minty" guitar on a 1-10 scale? Would 2 small dings bring it down to an 8 or 9? Based on the photos, what would you rate this guitar as?

Nice catch, there, Lofapco. It should flip very nicely. If not in our classifieds, on the Bay.

To begin with your last question:
8.7 (that's a 9-).

But it's always subjective of course, just like judging ice skating or gymnastics.

Some tend to keep the perfect 10 "for the master only". And my judgement is influenced and coloured by the seller's text, which was kind of negative. Holding it in my own hands or close-up photos could erase that negative image.

The point with your MAXXAS is: repairs of metallic finishes are VERY DIFFICULT and NEVER INVISIBLE. But for a rock axe it's very good.

Perhaps someone else says:"Hey, that's not a 9- but a 9+". But it is certainly 8.5 or higher...

"MINTY" is UNDAMAGED NO CORROSION OR MISSING PARTS BRAND NEW CONDITION.
That's very rare with old rock instruments.
Jazz guitarists are generally more careful with their instruments.
