Is this an X series DT350FR?

I have been told that this is an X series DT350FR. I know it was built in January 1985 and it was the 3514th guitar that month. Does anyone know the history behind this model and why I haven't seen anyone else playing one of these babies? It plays like a wet dream! I've had it since October 1991, paid $200.00 for it and I think I got a steal. They were only made like 2 years, but there always seems to be 2 or 3 at a time on eBay. They don't seem to be climbing in value like the earlier Destroyer II's are. Ones like yours are normally going for $250 to $350. Most collectors prefer either the first "Korina" Destroyers (which I've seen sell for over $2,500)or the earlier set neck DestroyerII's with flame top & binding. The going rate on those is the $750 to $1,300 range. The "X shaped" ones haven't really caught on in the vintage market. Kinda like a Nash Rambler. They're a rare, classic car, but not really coveted by the mass market, so that dictates the "value." HOWEVER, if you find the right guy at the right time who has been wanting one, the value goes up to that person. It's all about timing. Ultimately, value is whatever it's worth to you, or whoever you are trying to sell it to. So, is this a keeper, or are you going to sell it off? Anyhoo, just my .02 in insight. This is definitely a keeper, she has been in my possession since October 1991 and everything works and it plays so sweet not to mention it can handle everything I have thrown at it. It has played in churches as part of a praise and worship group (Imagine this fire red guitar in the altar!) I have run it through a chorus pedal, distortion, you name it. If I need a specific sound I can get it with just my Yamaha multi function pedal and my Peavey Bandit amp. The days that we paid 900-1200 guilders for a second hand '70s Fender Stratocaster and 1710 guilders for a new American Standard Stratocaster (guilders were about 0.45 EURO in 2002). The prices started to rise with the new millennium. "Even guitars of the '90s will be considered vintage, because they are from the previous millennium", Nicky Moeken (ex-editor of "Gitarist" Netherlands and editor of "Gitaar Plus") explained to me in 1999. He advised me to keep my collection together for a decade or so... (the discussion was about the appreciation of Framus instruments in particular, but he generalized it to all instruments from before 2000). But there's always the problem of room, so I've sold 11 or so... most low end acoustics and a two basses (at least 4 from Aria, a Maxwin by Pearl Ovation model, a Sigma with Fishman, which was not low end btw). For some of those Arias I probably would have got more money today, like the Cardinal Bass CB-300 and the SL (which I had bought for the aftermarket donor Gotohs). It's remarkable how much people ask and pay for these cheapos today, so I guess the price of your DT350 might go up too. In fact it's a far better guitar than the Aria Pro II SL. What we saw in the '80s was a wave of Floyd Rose and licenced heavy duty tremolos with fine tuners, and after that there was this wave of back to basic vintage tremolos or even hardtails, because these fine tuner trems are nice, as long as you don't break or loose a part. You don't want to search the world for one fine tuner screw. But your guitar seems in pretty good shape. The last time I took my Ibanez to a luthier was around 1999. The guy took one look at it as he opened the case and said, "I'll give you 1,200US just the way it is!" I thought well if it's worth 1,200 to you then I'm not selling. Is there someone or some place that can repaint it like the original?   Gemberbier Username: Gemberbier Registered: 5-2006 Posted on Sunday, November 18, 2007 - 1:52 pm:    I don't have the 1985 pricelist, but the one of 1984 is available on www.ibanezrules.com There you can see that even the DT155 was $495.- and the DT500 was $595.- So, you can expect the price of the DT350 to be somewhere in the middle, let's say $550.- NEW So, to be honest, I think that back in 1999 that luthier would have been considered totally nuts. You should have taken the money and changed the dollars for British Pounds. Leave the finish as it is. A refinish is considered a mortal sin.
