As I understand it, Ibanez championed, or maybe even invented the switching found on their H-S-H guitars from the '80s to today. Specifically, the 5-way setup, where the humbucker is split and one coil mixed with the middle pickup in positions 2 and 4.

This makes for a versatile guitar, one that can bridge the gap between strat and LP territory, but really excels at neither. The strat sounds are passable, but not as bell like, or quacky as a strat style guitar. And in humbucker mode, I find that the ubiqutous S1 middle pickup takes away from the otherwise smooth humbucker tone with its strong magnetic field - I hear a little "chainsaw" and harshness that goes away the more I lower the S1.

I really like that I have most of the bases covered with my collection, in terms of wood type, bridge and pickup options, so I can choose based on my mood.

What are your thoughts?

H/S/H is a cool configuration cause it offers you wide choice, especially if you add a push/pull to split hums. but my fave pickup configuration ever is H/S w/3-way, or even H/H but with push/pull to split hums. what i need is just a full hum at the bridge and a single at the neck.

I hate the H-S-H combination. That middle pickup is just in the way. The pickups are too crowded. I prefer a H-H 24 fret neck or H-S-S with a 22 fret neck combination. I love the sound of a single in the neck position. I also like the middle single for clean rhythm sounds.
