Unwanted hum/buzz

Author Message   Badcatty Username: Badcatty Registered: 05-2005 Posted on Sunday, May 15, 2005 - 4:49 am:    I recently purchased (from three different places), an Ibanez GRX-40, a Peavey 15w amp, and a Radio Shack guitar cable. When assembled, I'm getting a low hum/buzzing sound, argh. I listened to the amp before buying, and it was fine. Is there a chance the problem is the cable? I can get the noise to stop by holding one of the plug ends. If so, what would be a better cable to look for? (I live on Kodiak Island in Alaska, and resources are very limited.)Any thoughts will be appreciated. I've been playing acoustic guitars for many years, but this is my first experience with electric.   Tonedef Username: Tonedef Registered: 03-2004 Posted on Sunday, May 15, 2005 - 2:28 pm:    I'd be very suspicious of that cable. Radio Shack ain't where the pros shop. Borrow one from a friend and try it. Good quality cables are easy to come by on ebay, and online via music stores. I got different brand of cable (Axl) and still have the noise. No real music stores here, so I guess I'll just live with it. If I keep the TV on quietly, THAT noise covers hum/buzz and removes irritation. You might have a bad ground somewhere (unless Dave-g hit the nail about a replaced jack). Check that the amp is grounded properly, and check the ground wire on your guitar.
