RG520... Couple of questions

As far as I could find out, it's not being made anymore... I ran a search but couldn't find the answer to my question. How does it compare to guitars like the RG 1570 and 2550? As for the differences, I believe both the 1570 and the 2550 are basswood (as opposed to the 520's mahogany). So there are tone differences there. Also, don't the 1570 and the 2550 come with the new Edge Pro II tremolo? That shouldn't cause any tone differences, but might be a consideration. It's quite a bit heavier than my basswood RGs. I can't really speak to the differences of the pickups in the 2550 (I haven't heard them). And you're correct. The 520 was short lived... I really like the quiled veneer, and the fact that there is no middle single coil pickup. Besides being a lower profile than the older one, you can string your guitar through the body without having to clip the ball ends off the strings. This isn't an issue for me as I usually run the ball end on the tuner side, run the string to the bridge, use two figers at the nut for slack and clip off the excess... usually provides about two wraps around the tuner and there's no sharps. Anyway.. On my RGs, I rarely use the middle pickup. If I were you, I'd probably spring for the newer guitar. Less wear on the pivots (which hopefully translates to better tuning stability, and don't the newer guitars have the 5 piece necks? Then Rich gives a harsh review of the new trems (deservingly so). My new Edge Pro II trem does not have the issues he's noted in his review, but it is worth the read, just so you know what to look for. http://www.ibanezrules.com/namm/2003/trems.htm No problem. FWIW - My RG520 was, at one time, my main player. It's a good guitar too...
