I just bought an old destroyer 2 & I need help from the experts on this board with info. It is candy apple red & looks almost identical to the one on this site.

http://www.grouseguitars.com.au/sold/ibanezdestroyer.htm

The only differences are that it has 3 pickups instead of 2 and it has a pickguard in the lower horn area around the pickup selector.

The finish is kind of banged up but the wood seems intact. I bought it with the intention of stripping it down & doing a re-finish.

My questions are if anyone can tell me the exact model, and what kind of wood I should expect to find underneath all of that poly. It is pretty heavy, so I'm thinking mahogany based on what I'm reading, but I also see references to korina. Was that just because of the Gibson lawsuit, or were some of them actually made from korina? The serial number is D820053 which I believe indicates that it was made in '82.

Any help would be appreciated.

It looks kinda like this one...

You got the serial number and vintage correct. Though I don't think any of the Destroyer II's were made from korina wood. The Register lists all of the Destroyer II bodies as being made of basswood.

From what I remember reading... the original Destroyer (Explorer copy) was made of japanese ash, with a korina finish.

At anyrate, some pictures of your new guitar would be helpful. (they're worth a few hundred words anyway).

Here is the original listing.

The pickup routes look factory, but it is possible that the pickguard was an add on.

I thought basswood was relatively light. Maybe it's just the sheer size of the body that's giving it weight.

Thanks.
