Is it possible to determine the model of the guitar from the serial number. I have what I think is a 1981 AR500. The serial number is G816066. Any help appreciated.

Hi! The differences between models are so obvious, that it is quite easy to tell what model you have. The serial number itself only tells the date and production number, latter for warranty purposes.. Your guitar is from July 1981..
If it is AR500 then there should be six knobs, three microswitches, PU selector and LED, it namely is equipped with active electronics..
If it lacks those, but has two microswitches and "regular" 4 control knobs (PU selector of course also), then you have an AR300..
There are excellent photos all around this site, use "search" option! One pict tells more than thousand words..

Here's an AR500 on ebay. Nice front, but the back is pretty raw.
