I'm getting ready to order a few sample guitars from a reputable guitar manufacturer in China, and I noticed that they have a fake JEM in their catalog. They're not calling it a JEM, any more than they're claiming their copies of Fender guitars are actual Strats or Telecasters. Despite the fact that there are probably more copies of Strats and LPs in the world than there are originals, Fender and Gibson still seem to be selling their wares briskly.

So, my question is: is this a terrible thing? I realize that having a knock-off dilutes the cachet of the original, and I'm not defending this as a good thing, just asking if it's really terrible. Bad, maybe, but terrible?

One thing I was wondering - is the JEM monkey grip design patented, like Fender and Gibson's headstock designs?

Looking forward to hearing your views on this...

There's a big long discussion thread on fake JEMs on this forum.

Here's my view, and I only speak for myself. So a counterfeit JEM = a JEM copy with a imitiation Ibanez logo on the headstock.

A copy of a JEM may be a guitar shaped/colored/inlaid like a JEM but have a different company logo on the headstock and maybe a different headstock shape.

The problem I have with counterfeits is that unknowing consumers purchase them thinking they're authentic. It happens all the time, call it what you want.

Yeah, it's really a terrible thing.

If it appears to be an original (in other words, not clearly marked as being something else), it's probably a crime to even import it.
