I guess the Radius series was called "Radius" because of the radius.
What can be so special about a radius?
Well, it can be compound, like a cone.
I saw you have one,
http://acapella.harmony-central.com/forums/showthread.php?s=965c601f28472fdcb04f 21636ec4771a&postid=15926364

so what you need are a lot of concave paper circle templates of different sizes, with the radius of those circles written on them. And try them all on several positions of the neck from the nut to 22nd fret.

So, give "Clyde"* some paper, a pair of compasses and a pair of scissors and put him to work.

Good luck,

Ginger

(By the way: I just read, the orangutan who played Clyde in "Any Which Way But Loose" (1978) and Any Which Way You Can (1980) was found dead of a cerebral hemorrhage two weeks after the second film wrapped. Sad, isn't it... He was the greatest. Managed to in police car without getting a ticket)

Ah, I found something for you.
The measurements of the neck are on it:
nut width 42mm and thickness at the nut 19mm and the 12th fret 21.5mm. (not the fretboard radius)
http://www.geocities.com/xcvxcv65/ibanez/ibanez-540radius.htm

and something about multi-radiused REAR necks on later JS models.
http://www.jemsite.com/ibanez/spec_js.htm

So this "JS feature" could be an old 80's concept that was already used on the Radius series.

But since you were more interested in the fretboard, you'll have to ask Clyde nicely.

Incase you missed it in the previous posts...

It's 42mm at the nut, and 56mm at the 22nd fret.

42mm and 56mm are the width of the neck/fretboard.

Take a look at http://www.warmoth.com/guitar/necks/anatomy.cfm

430mm is the radius of the circle which describes the curvature of the fretboard (from low E to high E) for Edge-equipped guitars (with the exception of the JS series, which has a rounder, more Strat-like fretboard radius).

So that gives a circle of about ~2700mm, or ~8.8 feet.

I'm not trying to be argumentative when I say that seems large. I guess that'd be a good way to measure the curvature of a fretboard, but it seems like it could swing widely and not be very useful info without having the neck in hand.

Brent,
you don't use the whole circle but just the 42mm - 56mm crust of a slice of the cake.

One way to test if this is correct:
Take a piece of cardboard of 50x50 cm.
Draw a quarter of a circle with the legs of your pair of compasses on 430 mm, starting in a corner of the square.
Cut the inner part out without damaging the contour, because that's your 430mm radius template. Write 430mm on it.
If you put this on your fretboard and it fits at all places, it is indeed a 430mm radius.
If it fits at only 1 particular position, you have a multi-radiused (or compound radius)fretboard.
If it doesn't fit at all, Eric's guess was wrong.

Here's some tidbits on calculating different aspects of fretboard radius:

http://www.ibanezrules.com/catalogs/us/1993/pu.jpg

the 540RHH is probably going to have an ultra neck based on the 19.5-21.5mm thickness. what's that fretboard radius?

As I read on the website the hight differences are so small, that it is possible to FILE A COMPOUND RADIUS INTO THE FRETS.
But it is also possible the fretboard itself is conical instead of cylindrical.

The multi-radius back of the neck has nothing to do with that, but it determines (part of) the feel of the neck, playing comfort so to say.

In the excel sheet we see:
For a nut width of 42mm and the particular scale of the example:
nut radius: 305mm
12th fret radius: 467mm

You could check this by cutting cardboard templates with these radia and trying if they fit.
