What can be so special about a radius? Well, it can be compound, like a cone. And try them all on several positions of the neck from the nut to 22nd fret. So, give "Clyde"* some paper, a pair of compasses and a pair of scissors and put him to work. The measurements of the neck are on it: nut width 42mm and thickness at the nut 19mm and the 12th fret 21.5mm. I'm not trying to be argumentative when I say that seems large. I guess that'd be a good way to measure the curvature of a fretboard, but it seems like it could swing widely and not be very useful info without having the neck in hand.   Gemberbier Username: Gemberbier Registered: 05-2006 Posted on Wednesday, September 20, 2006 - 8:20 pm:    Brent, you don't use the whole circle but just the 42mm - 56mm crust of a slice of the cake. One way to test if this is correct: Take a piece of cardboard of 50x50 cm. Draw a quarter of a circle with the legs of your pair of compasses on 430 mm, starting in a corner of the square. Cut the inner part out without damaging the contour, because that's your 430mm radius template. Write 430mm on it. If you put this on your fretboard and it fits at all places, it is indeed a 430mm radius. If it fits at only 1 particular position, you have a multi-radiused (or compound radius)fretboard. If it doesn't fit at all, Eric's guess was wrong. But it is also possible the fretboard itself is conical instead of cylindrical. The multi-radius back of the neck has nothing to do with that, but it determines (part of) the feel of the neck, playing comfort so to say. In the excel sheet we see: For a nut width of 42mm and the particular scale of the example: nut radius: 305mm 12th fret radius: 467mm You could check this by cutting cardboard templates with these radia and trying if they fit.
