Anyone have a good idea what migt have caused these cracks?

It seems to start at the trem studs.
Could be caused by strongly pulling the neck backward. If the body is not one piece (3 pieces glued), and you mill away a lot of material for the tremolo, the body piece connected to the neck is rather small. If the owner pulled the neck backwards in order to compensate a forward leaning neck (because of wrong string tension) he breaks out the middle part of the body.
He should have gone to a qualified guitar tech to adjust the truss rod and the tremolo.

There's a chance the rest of the body will fall off and will keep hanging on the wiring.

You could buy it for the parts and buy a new body.
