Every time I think I've found the "ultimate" Ibanez Guitar, I run across something new that leaves me speechless...and in search of more info about it. Here's the latest. From the pages of a '82 Artist/Musician series catalog the AR5000, Limited Edition. Please pinch me, 'cause I must be dreaming again. J This is what the catalog says about this beauty which was originally built for a musical instrument exhibition: -based on the popular Artist EQ -flame, bookmatched maple top -mahogony body -handrubbed, lacquer finish -ivoroid binding with thin line of Mexican Abalone -3 ply maple neck -ebony fretboard, velve touch frets -extremely fancy MOP/Abalone vine on fretboard, Limited Edition engraved in fancy MOP marker between 20th & 21st frets -Fretboard (not the neck) is bound along the front sides and bottom with w/b/w ivoroid. -Rosewood(?) overlayed peghead with fancy vine MOP/Abalone inlay; w/b/w ivoroid binding on top edge to match fretboard binding -Velve Tune 17:1, gold tuning machines -Super 58 pickups, Alnico III magnets, both with Tri-sound switches -Brass control knobs: master volume, master tone, gain -EQ Tone System; 3 controls for bass, mid, treble frequencies, LED on/off indicator -Gibraltar bridge (with sustain block underneath, I think) -Gibraltar Tailpiece (with fancy cloud ornament) There appears to be only one finish - I guess they would call it Antique Violin. If anybody knows anything else about these babies, please add to it. If you happen to have one, please think about having it featured in the Guitar Tours gallery.   spiro Posted on Friday, October 08, 2004 - 11:04 am:    I have one of these babies. everything is the same as it says in the brochure except mine is more of a sunburst finish than the one in the pic.Mine also has the standard artist control knobs with the rubber ring (sure grip I think). And Mine does not have ab inlays on the body purfling. Well mine looks like an AR3000 With a vine inlay I suppose.....   spiro Posted on Friday, October 08, 2004 - 11:04 am:    Oh by the way Both of mine have the Sustain block with Gibraltar stamped on them with a pat pend number...   SPIRO Posted on Friday, October 08, 2004 - 11:04 am:    One thing I have noticed not only with my artists but with others from the 80-84 period is that they look like they have a thin veneer of maple on top if you look closely you will see a line in the pickup cavities. Yes you can see that the top is a about half an inch thick but if you look carefully you will see a line following the cavity. Can someone else check theirs and tell me if this is just an illusion or what.. I have heard that ibanez did this on their guitars but had to investigate further....   LReynolds Posted on Friday, January 19, 2001 - 5:30 am:    i recently bought an '80 Artist which looks a lot like this guitar except it has block inlays (perhaps an AR3000) . I don't know much about the guitar. Is there a resource that can give me more info? I'm really in love with this guitar and wouldn't sell it or trade it for ANYTHING! What is the purpose of the Gain control as mine doesn't seem to make a difference to the sound.....I'm also having trouble tuning the guitar. It would sound perfect the one end, but on the other end it would be off a little...   Mark Munchenberg Posted on Monday, January 22, 2001 - 4:41 am:    LReynolds, If your guitar is in tune in one part of the neck and out of tune somewhere else it could be one of six problems. 1. Bad/old strings 2. Incorrect intonation on the bridge 3. Excessive relief in the neck 4. Incorrectly cut nut - could be too high 5. Worn or badly seated frets 6. If bridge has ever been changed or modified, it could now be in the wrong place. These six should form a checklist for you - going from the simplest to the most difficult to put right. If you need any advice or in checking these things out, post a help message here. Regards, Mark   Fox (Fox) Posted on Friday, October 24, 2003 - 5:27 am:    Some of the specs above differ from my brand new "baby" - first there is no abalone on the body binding -more like some wood veneer in place of ivoroid, there is a thin white line bordering the veneer.. It appears to not have been played much, the frets need a dressing, but I am stunned !   Dave_G (Dave_G) Posted on Tuesday, March 02, 2004 - 10:34 pm:    I put in an hour or so playing it-Hendrix & blues mostly-this is A LOT OF GUITAR ! It will take months (years ?) to master all the tonal qualities and potential this guitar has to offer. It's mellow with t thick blues tone and with the flick of a switch can tear it up with the sreaders-I am not worthy-its back to Mel Bay for me !
