Help me identify this thing!

Author Message   Blake Driver Posted on Friday, October 08, 2004 - 11:04 am:    I recently purchased a used Ibanez guitar from a pawnshop and I'm having great difficulty identifying what model it is. The S/N on the back of the head is C860108. I believe this means it was made in March of '86, #108 of the production run. Right underneath the S/N it says "Crafted in Japan". It's black and it's shaped like a Flying V with the lower point of the "V" about six inches shorter than the upper point. When you set it on its end it leans to the right. On the head it says "Proline Series" right next to the Ibanez name. It has a Floyd Rose style locking tremolo and all the hardware is black. It has "sharktooth" fret markers and white binding around the fingerboard. It has two humbucking pickups and a three-way toggle switch. Each pickup has two metal strips running across the width of each coil. It has one volume and one tone control. Both controls are push on/push off switches to change the pickups from humbucking to single coil. Oh, and the neck is not bolt on. It's one piece thru the body. It's a killer guitar, plenty of balls and a pretty radical body design. It's straight out of Judas Priest. I just don't understand why Ibanez didn't put a model number or name on it. I tried the Ibanez Homepage and they told me to send them a picture (lotta help there). Any information you have about this orphan would be greatly appreciated. Thanks.   jimeina Posted on Friday, October 08, 2004 - 11:04 am:    Well, the best I can do is say "Yep, this is an Ibanez Proline." Maybe a PL2660 or PL1660. They're great guitars but I don't think they were ever known by any other name than Proline. The Rhodes V style Prolines were eventually absorbed by the X Series (around '87) and the other more conventional Prolines (like the PL1770) faded from sight - or more correctly, evolved into the Radius and Saber series guitars. The nice thing about the pointy ones is that they're so cheap right now, what with being non-retro and out of vogue right now.   Bill Posted on Friday, October 08, 2004 - 11:04 am:    I just got my latest Ibanez, and I need help finding out the model, so I can learn more about the deatils. It's an S Series. The pick up config is : IBZUSA F2 & 2 - IBZUSA C2. Bolt on neck. Serial number is 890337. From what I've read on Ed Roman's site, it's looks like it's a 1988. Rosewood fretboard, with dot inlays. Double locking floating tremolo. Any help would be great. I'd appreciate if messages could be sent to my email address also. It looks close to the RS205, but it is black. RS205's acording to the brochure only were made in BN, BY and WH. Yes, it appears you're absolutely right, this is the RS135BK. I should have known not to think it was the 140 due to the humbucker in that model. This one I came across in an obscure listing... Nice to meet you in another way than by 5 mails we send a day.... ;-) Could this oldie bass be a 1902. We have a picture of such a bass in our archive (the "ferrari red" one). This could be a sunburst version. It also has the thumrest on the other side, but that's pretty common. After all the thumrests on the Precision copies and the Jazzbass copies also switch from one side to another. Here is the picture of the red 1902. Themisfits, what'ya think? Thanks for your help, but this one we searching for it, it`s NOT a 1902. Take a look at these pictures. So is somebody outhere, who know`s the model number of this bass ? I call them the 902 Modell, or 901 with only one pickup. ( i try to write down some words in english, but im not the best one in english conversation. It's almost the same except the sunburst finish, the thumb rest and the metal icon is gold colored. I wish i knew more about it. I would like to piece its history togethor at least you could give me a year. I would like to know the model of this bass. it's a really nice bass, in great shape for being 42 years old. How do you know how old it is if you don't know what model it is? Ibanez's past is so foggy. I wanted to know how much i could get for it and the guy at the local shop offered $75. I'm looking into selling it but if i can't get a good offer i'd rather save it for when old ibanez basses will be appreciated for how nice they are. Are there not many off these basses out there? Why would the thumb rest on your's be at the bottom of the guitar? If it was played upside down by a lefty, it would make sense that the rest was moved. Is there any sign that it was originally on the left side of the guitar? As far as there being one Japanese guy who knows everything, we all wish that were so. Or better yet, someone who officially documented what the company did then saved that information for posterity. Alas, things were not done that way until much later in time (late 70's). That's why there's not very much information on your model bass. Harry and Hasy are probably the greatest source of information (even if it's only a picture) of 60s and early 70s Ibanez guitars we all have. Regarding value, your pretty much on your own. As they are virtually unheard of, they are not in demand and would only be valuable to a collector. All the original Fender Bass from the 50's came with the "finger rest " on the bottom side.. This was where it was placed by Leo fender using it as a finger rest rather than a thumb rest   Themisfits89 (Themisfits89) Posted on Saturday, May 29, 2004 - 9:37 pm:    I took a closer look at the metal logo and totally sure that it is golden not chrome like other ones. Why would the "finger rest" not thumb rest be different from the basses like this one. If you go up a litte bit there is a picture of a bass that resembles mine except there is a thumb rest on the left side, which is a finger rest and is on the right side.   Johns (Johns) Posted on Sunday, May 30, 2004 - 9:27 am:    Looks like the Captain has found some source info on this model. And it appears that the "finger rest" on the right is original. You rest your fingers on it (not your thumb.)and play the bass the way it was originally designed, with your thumb....
