hi id like to know what you guys think of the S540 and its tone stock
and then id like to know if you guys have a good suggestion of pickups (passive and active)
and can anyone tell me if there is any other colors available for this guitar other than the standard black and night blue
also can anyone tell me what kind of multi effects processors are good and cheap
(rackmount only) thanks guys
also has anyone given the new Death record a listen?

With regard to S540 options, check out:
http://www.ibanez.com/s_series.html

If you're only considering the LTD, there are only two colors (Black and Night Navy).

You might want to check out the QS in Transparent Black or Red. If you're really serious about an S and want to spend some big money, there's always the S2540 Prestige in Natural, or if you're really balls out, get a J Custom S!

I don't own any of these, so I really can't speculate as to which pickups compliment them well. Pickups are so damn hard to nail sometimes. If you check out the "What guitar should I use??" thread, people were discussing various pickup options.

Later,
Kyle

i bought an s 540 LTd the last year they made them in lipstick red and i put in emg active's an 81 in the bridge and neck and an sa single in the middle
now it sounds tons better. ibanez has seriously bummed me cause they have never offered this model in a 24 fret neck, but anyway they have seriously slacked on the colors available in the rg models too. guitar shop the magazine did a pickup evaluation in an issue i got about pickup's maybe i can scan it and send it to you, also dimarzio usually gives a good description of theyre pickup's what kinda sound are you going for?

Speaking of the S2540 NT. Anybody know how much one of these goes for in real life?

John, the guitar in the picture above lists for about $1650.00. With a decent discount from a retailer you should be able to snatch it for btween $1050.00 and $1200.00. If your dealer doesn't have one in stock (which most dont), be prepared to wait about three months for it though. I've got a Prestige RG on order now.

Any comments on how the older USA RGs with alder backs sound? I've tried the new Presige with mahagany and liked it ok...was wondering if the alder gave it a bit more sing.

I have a s540ltd and a s1520fb-nt both are beautiful. Nothing beats the Ibanez S-series except maybe a jem77bfp!!I would recommend the s1520fb, you can pick it up for about $999 and it is worth every penny!!

I also have a S 540 Ltd and I also put EMG 81's in. It's a great guitar, but the standard pickups aren't sad.
That's my humble opinon off course

i've been playing for 30 yrs, build my guitars and rework stock guitars and i've found that given the same wood and pups a floyd is the tone sucker in the equation, sorry floyd! Duncan makes a trembucker which supposedly makes up for this tonal loss, i've not tried them but i do know that with stock ibanez or fralins a hardtail will sound much better. jimmy thackery plays a floyd/strat with bardens and gets great tone, my next build will be a 550 w/floyd & bardens, i'll let you know.

Hey, I have an S540LTD in oil stained finish. By looking at the serial number, I believe it was made in 1995. I've searched over old ibanez' catalogs and I couldn't find my color. I think this guitar was not released in US. Anyone interested?
