I just purchased a Saber last night that I can't identify. It is an older one (it doesn't have the AANJ). It's a purple burst with a flame top. But I think that the body is all maple, the back is flamed too. It does have the "Custom Made" inlay on the 21st fret. Did Ibanez make an all maple Saber? Any ideas on a year, the serial # starts with 010 so I figure it's a '90. It is made in Japan although it doesn't say that under the serial#. And the serial# is lamanated onto the back of the headstock instead of ingraved on the neckplate. Any help is appreciated!!

A couple of points I forgot to mention:
It has an Edge tremolo and the pickup configuration is S-S-H with Ibanez USA pickups. Any information is appreciated!!

your guitar was produced in early 93 around there or possibly late 92
ibanez NEVER made an all maple bodied saber
they are maple capped meaning the top and back of the body are maple but the centre is mahogony.
your guitar is also in the 97 catalog as well as the S540FMTP
its not rare at all
sorry to bring you bad news hehehe
the newer models have the lo pro edge though
so there ya go
that probably didnt help at all

I'm sorry Guitar Guy, that was sarcasm dripping from my last post. I was just wondering what it was made out of, but since I posted that, I took a good look at the routed area for the tremolo and saw a difinitive mahogany wood grain. Thanks for the info though!!

Calling it a "cap" is kinda optimistic - on my ~'89 model, it's just a 1/16" or so veneer. That's fine with me - I like the (lack of) weight & sound of mahogany better anyway, and just like maple for the flame. But calling it a cap implies a chunk o' wood like a Paul, which is misleading...

Hey there guys ... I too recently bought an S series that is very similar to the one Scott described, yet mind came with a 3 way toggle switch and 3 knobs on it. My guitar doesn't have the flame on it but it does have a spectacular purple finish with glitter in it and weird patterns and designs like you see on some motorcycles or cars painted by pain and body shops ( I believe this was done with saran wrap and paint and clearcoat. ) What suprises me is that the screws on the back of the neck plate look untouched so I am guessing this came from ibanez this way. From the looks of it that stuff came on it from the factory. The s series I bought also has a custom made inlay in the 21st fret and oval pearl inlays in the neck, with H S S configuration for the pickups. It has an F2 in the bridge and the other two pickups are C2's ibz usa's. I believe this is mahogany, it is heavier than the other ones I have looked at, and this thing was made in 1992 judging from the serial number and was the 327th one made in that line that year. The neck plate on the back of mine also doesn't have a serial number on it. It has a Hollywood CA, address although I know that it is a jap model, so nobody needs to tell me that ... hehe. I also noticed that it has a D-tuna on it ( apparently put there by the previous owner. ) What I am trying to find out is how many of these were made with 3 knobs instead of the 5-way and how much did these things go for brand new back then ?

and also are these halfway decent guitars with the original pickups in them ? and with 9's ?

This one has 10's on it and sounds pretty good but I have heard they sound better with a FRED in the bridge or another similar pickup.

Even calling it a veneer is even probably optimistic. I could be shot for saying this, but I remember hearing about the Ibanez "photo flame" in the mid-late 90's. You can infer what you want about the term "photo flame", but I remember it showing up on Saber guitars and later on certain MIJ Fender guitars.
